I might be looking at picking up a cheap truck and want your guys' opinions. I was looking for something dependable, can tow a car, and gets decent gas mileage (if that's even possible).
I'm looking to spend around $3k...I was thinking a 97+ F150 with the 4.6l motor, a sliverado/sierra, or a Ram 1500.
What do you guys think?

Yea, I meant to ad Toyota to my list...but I can't seem to find any in my price range. Will the Toyota V6's be able to tow my mustang around??

I would throw Toyota Tacomas off that list then. Nice trucks but the extra cab isn't much of a seat. If you're going to tow the Mustang, I would at least get a 1500 with some sort of V8. The toys are a little light in that department, unless you spring for an older Tundra. Those aren't too bad in an extra cab.
I say Ford F150 or Chevy Silverado. I like Dodge trucks but their quality and auto trannies are junk.

This! I'm also looking to pick one up, we'll I've been looking but don't have any room left to park one. They got the better interior in 95 but 96+ is OBDII. Cheap parts, very easy to work on and can go forever.

my 96 tahoe spends most of it's life like this unfortunately.
let's see...
it's a 5.7L vortec with 4l60e trans, 4x4 sport with z71 package, 3.73 gears front and back.
Cracked heads, that was a cool $1700 repair for new heads, rockers, pushrods, head bolts, intake bolts, gaskets, spark plugs, plug wires, cap/rotor, and paying a shop to do the crank sensor relearn proceedure because the distributor had to come out.
wouldn't pass smog, traced it to a fuel injector spider clogged up, replaced with GMPP MPFI injection conversion kit, more gaskets, etc.
then the transmission blew up, lost 3rd/4th gear. Pulled it and had that rebuilt/beefed up everything, replaced the seals on the transfer case at same time...put it all back in, and now the engine is knocking, it seems when the transmission blew up it hurt the engine too.
oh, and the truck has 120k miles on it and has never really been off-road, never in mud, never towed anything, just been camping a few times.
can't recommend one, sorry!
love my ford truck to death though, no comparison

I had a 2wd 99 Tahoe with a 5.7. I gave that truck a beating . Only thing I replaced was a crank sensor and a fuel pump .
My mom ended up giving me 4k for it 4 years ago so I could get HD f150 .
I drove the truck this weekend and noticed it has 215k on the clock . Still rans like a champ . Those 5.7 can take a beating .

Yea sucks to hear that man. Guess you just got a bad engine or something cuz those are low miles for a truck that age. I have a 1998 Chevy Silverado 1500 5.7L 2WD. Man do I love that thing. Would recommend one in my opinion. I don't use mine for much towing or hauling since but they can sure get the job done if neede. Gas ain't that bad neither.

the guy who rebuilt mine does 10 a week typically, the 4l60e is not a very reliable trans at all, IMO.
on the fullsizechevy truck forums it seems occasionally they just work with no maint. ever done to them, but most seem to blow up right around 100k.

I have a 1990 v6 toyota pickup. The 3vze engines have NO BALLS. The 3.4 liter toyotas are a bit better like what comes in the T100s. If it were me and you wanted reliability towing a car.. I would personally get around a 2000 silverado. F150s with the 4.6 from late 90s to 2002 have an issue with the heads blowing the spark plugs out due to the aluminum and only have 5 threads in the spark plug wells.
