So I've recently decided to join the usmc and i am only days away from swareing in and find myself at a crossroads when picking a mos. With my asvab scores i qualify for everything they offer. My question is what are or were your jobs in the usmc? What is a good job to go for? what are jobs i should not good for and why? My interest include, like most on this board, working on cars and just using my hands in general, but I do have interest in going into the law field (lawyer). What jobs easily transfer over to civilian life? what are your experiences with you job in the usmc? Thanx in advance

with the marinnes, any mos you pick is gona be your secondary, your primary will always be infantry and from my experience dont expect if you choose michanic or any other mos that you wont get deployed or leave the wire, one thing i will say about the marines is that they all go on missions and that 6 months on 6 months off is gotta be harsh, and your equipment will come from the bottom of the barrel.
choose a mos that you can use outside of the military, thats were i made my mistake, choose something like michaninc or electrition, if you dont and you decide the long haul in the marines isnt for you then you will regret not getting trained in a more practical job.
btw i was army not marines but i spent 9 months with them. and plz dont fall for marines are better than everyone else stereotype, stay level headed [ July 03, 2011, 06:41 PM: Message edited by: 915.0gt ]

I don't remember the marines having much to do with air support but if you do anything with aviation go with helicoptors

Congrats on joining the service. The marines have three sub divisions: 1) infantry, 2) air, 3) support. You have no choice in which one yo end up in but you knowing this can help you decide what mos to choose. Whatever you do, don't choose grunt. You seem like a smart dude, choose a mos that will get you promoted quickly. When I was in the navy, they had schools that got you promoted to e4 upon graduation. I'm sure the marines have schools like that too. Good luck.

The marines promote just like any other service up until nco (e-5) then it becomes more difficult since there are a lot of marines and not so many nco positions

First, let me say that Marines kick ass in what they do......fight and kill, if your looking for something technical go air force or navy. if your looking to fight and have a skill.... NAVY Seabee

In the Marine corps all MOS's are made to support our infantry I choose a field radio operator so I could either be with a grunt company or a comm company. In Iraq I was with a grunt company and a comm company. If you want to fight in the front lines be a grunt. If you want to support them then do everything else. If you plan on being a cop or some type of law enforcement you can also be a military police officer. If you want a MOS that you can use after you are out then choose something technical.
