or weld for the sheet metal workers union , we need welders bad and the work is easier. The apprenticeship is 5 years long but well worth it , after 5 years you will be making $50+/hr.

Is that commercial or residental? res dont pay shit. not mentioning that you have to be a PRE-apprentice for a year at $12 bucks hr before becoming a real apprentice. plus, theres test after test just to become an apprentice as a sheet metal worker. your right about you make more money. but did you know theres over 250 sheet metal workers out of work right know in local 104?

Commercial ,light commercial makes $43/hr and residential makes $37/hr .I was a pre for 1 month , there is 1 easy math test and 1 placement test. All the trades are are hurting right now , I have been lucky , in 11 years I have not spent 1 day on the books.

My son needs help he got his advanced welding certificate the BAT card and TWIC card. The job person who was supposed to get him in Chevron faked. Now he's going to work at Kragen on Monday. Me being a Teamster feel he needs a Union Job.

u guys are pulling in pretty good numbers considering the amount of training and length of apprenticeship required..
to pull $50/hr are you getting regular work at a mininum of 80hrs a month for the entire year or does the work fluctuate throughout the year?

i have no knowledge about this field obviously so im surprised to see those numbers being thrown out..doesnt sound too bad.
what are the cons with these jobs? any health risks?

tell your son hes lucky he did not get into chevron. i was just released from chevron along with 300 other employees, and 1,000 more to come in the next few weeks, may i ask what was your son going to do at chevron with a weld cert and not in a union? weld for the non union?...

and to the poster above, work always goes in booms meaning, 2-4 years steady and then some slow time for maybe 6 months, its not unheard of for journeymen in my trade to choose to work 6-8months a year and make 80-90k...

My aunt Martha was supposed to pull him in. I'm sure it would be Union as much as I pounded in his head and my daughter that the jobs they get have to be Union. I've been a Teamster for twenty years and we here at UPS are constantly filing greviences over the jippo's coming in our yard stealing our work, even other drivers from other buildings. Believe me Union is the only way to go for my kids.

Another thing here a UPS they take the Union fees and dues out of your check. I don't think he knows where the Hall is or what the Union is called but he welded pipes in school.
