At 1:55 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2008, the Sheriff’s Communications Center received a call reporting a Rancho Cordova Police motorcycle officer was injured as a result of a collision on Coloma Road.
The RCPD motor unit was traveling on Coloma Road at Chardonay Drive when a vehicle collided with him. As a result of the collision, the 13-year veteran of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at Mercy San Juan Hospital.
Deputy Lawrence Canfield (43), a 13 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, had been assigned as a motor officer with the contract city of Rancho Cordova. Deputy Canfield, a second generation Deputy Sheriff, is survived by his wife, two children, parents, extended family, and his law enforcement brethren.
As a result of the fatal collision, the California Highway Patrol Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) will be handling this investigation.
Information about the memorial service is pending.

I never had the privilege of meeting him, but from everything I have heard from his fellow partners and LEO he was a great man and fine officer . Another very sad day for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department that seems to repeat all to often; Five have passed in the last four years
