I am trying to get opinions on which car to (possibly) get. I found a decent black 2001 Bullit with 114k miles for a fair price. He has full exhaust and new clutch.

I also found a black 1996 S281. I love these cars because theyre so sexy, but I know performance really isnt there.

What are the pros and cons of each?

+1, but I'd get the Saleen, the looks sell it for me....PI swap and a Vortech would get rid of the only bad thing about the 96 Slowleens....

Stock to stock, I'd gt the Bullitt

I love Bullits & all, but SN95 Saleens are soooo sexy.... A KB Cobra motor swap would make it a badass sleeper, because everyone knows that 96-98 GT's are slow as hell....Even a 96-98 Cobra N/A motor would be sick...

my vote goes to the sn95 also. the body lines are just sexy as hell. In addition, if you find a 96-98 cobra engine, you'll go 12s n/a with minor bolt ons.

I agree that the saleen is just sexy which is why I want one, but the one I'm considering also has its flaws. It got over 140k miles, may need brakes soon, worn drivers seat, needs some minor body work on the saleen kit, and looks like it has been repainted on both quarter panels. Not sure about accidents though.

The bullitt has 114k miles but no major body damage except scratch on front bumper. Its not as sexy but it does have potential. I'm in the $ 8-9k range so I know I can't ask for too much but what would be the better deal?

Saleen, then supercharge it! Or get that block from John. I think the Saleen will keep its value over time.

I do really like the Saleen but I checked out 3 different ones that are in $9k range and they all need work...I would have thought that people would care for these cars a little more.

For some reason, they've all been painted, have a cracked side skirt, messed up paint on the front bumper, and driver seat is torn.

I have a Bullitt in mind but havent checked it out yet...still trying to decide [Frown]

There is a reason for this. A daily driven Saleen will show some wear in just a few years. I had mine for three years and about 20,000 miles. Was impossible to count the number of bumper chips, the rear wing started to come off and there was a discernible difference between the factory paint and the Saleen applied paint. But, I do admit, that was one damn sexy car when it was new and I got a good price when it was time to sell it.

Buy a 96-98 Cobra for the performance & value, then save up for a Saleen body kit & paint if you like the looks. If you wait long enough, you might even be able to find a high mileage 99/01 Cobra for the same price as that Saleen.

im about to pull the trigger on a black 1996 Saleen...good decision? Or should I wait for a Bullit to come around?

The car is not perfect, but I'm getting it for a great deal and it actually runs A LOT better than 3 other SN95 Saleens that I test drove with less miles.

This one has about 140K miles and was supposedly the original owners commuter car. The gray leather is kind of shot, but I think I can find a nice set of black leather seats from an 01 GT to replace them.

The motor runs strong, may need a clutch and brakes soon (but not immediately), and the Saleen body kit needs some love.

Body is straight for the most part and will look bad ass with my black FR500 (thanks MIKE)!

I'm looking for something to keep for a while (if not forever) and be worth some money in the future, ie: 93 cobra, sn89 saleen, etc..

Please comment [patriot]

honestly, bro, i would go with the one that is in the best condition. sure the sn95 is cool and is a saleen, but it sounds like it is really showing it's mileage, inside and out. both motors are TIRED with the high mileage, but you want one that's clean.

I know what you mean...I really am trying to find the best condition car, but not sure which one I really like better.

Yes, the bullit is faster (stock) and a bit newer, but the Saleen has a lot of potential (I think) and is much sexier.

Yes, the Saleen does show its age, but from what I heard, they all pretty much do [Frown]

If I were to keep the car for a long time, which would PROBABLY have better value??

well the bullit will def hold it's value a LITTLE better because it's newer and has lower miles than the saleen... but let's face it... both of them are mustangs... and both will depreciate tremendously over time.

i would honestly say get the bullit... but if you plan on touching up and recondition the paint and interior of the saleen, then get the saleen.

either way, both can be fast with a supercharger or other things so i wouldn't base your decision on that.
