Topic: looking for a kid's bike....

i'm looking for a kid'ss bike for a little buddy of mine. He's turning 5 and i don't know what to get since i don't have children.
Any dads out there? what should i be looking for?
Any stores where i can find cheap bikes? i was hoping to keep this under 200, but i'm clueless as to how much they cost.

Huffy's were the shit when I was a kid. Take a look at Walmart, Target, etc. They should have racks of kids bikes.

Mongoose FTW!! stay away from cheap huffys lol. i dont think they make them anymore so you dont have to worry. Your talking about BMX right?

You have come to the right place, I have 5 boys from 13 -> 7.
Mongoose's are good and sturdy and you can buy them at toys r us. The also have a store brand called "Next" which is pretty good. I opted to get my son a Redline because he did extremely well in school. But Mongoose is the best bang for buck at that age. As they get older they want better bikes and such. but for now you can get away with some no-name brand stuff too.
And at age 5, you can get one for way under 200.00. If you get it from toy r us, check their work on putting it together. They tend to rush and not tight crap. ![[Mad]](mad.gif)
Oh and get him a bike with all the pads. Gooseneck pad, handle bar pad, and frame pad. At that age he is bound to hit his nuts or fall.

Mongoose for sure, i have problems with Next, etc... off brand bikes, the have Mongoose at Target now i have two boys 7 & 9 and they thrash hard on things one has a Mongoose and the other a Redline

LOL @ HUFFYS!!!! We made fun of anyone poor sap that rode them! Huffys were the butt of all of our bike jokes!! Do the kid a favor and get him a Mongoose or a Haro or anything but a HUFFY!!!!!

Huffy's were fine for litte kids. Of course I'm not talking about BMX bikes. Haro isn't even worth mentioning in this thread. Too expensive, and they don't really make bikes for 5 year olds.

i got my kids bikes at REI not on the cheaper scale but not expensive either. for a 5 yr old i would get a 16" size bike.. good luck

what's up hoe, how u been? and for the bike issue like everyone said mongoose is the your best bet.

This makes me remember the Bad@$$ chrome Hutch i had when i was a kid back in the 80's....After that got stolen i had a chrome GT Interceptor.....I had to start off with the crappy huffys 1st then work my way up to the Hutch.....

hahahaha...hutch. I remember I tried to get a hutch, but they were sold out so I opted for a robinson. I have had a Haro, GT Pro performer, Diamond Back, Red Line (I Think Rad Rick rode a redline) and a Mongoose. Man this brings back memories. Some painful, I still have scarred shins from the "bear trap" pedals. To this day I ride a Redline Cruiser to the gym. Love that bike

redline, or go to a bmx track and fid a nice tricked out used bike that he will be able to use till hes about 12. that way its a nice bike not matter how old it is.
thats what myparents did for me. i ened up racing and did really good.
but who knows maybe he wont be in to the bike thing.

First off, can he ride 2 wheels yet?...I know my boys can, but some 5 year olds can't....Get some good training wheels...The diamond backs have ball bearing training wheels...
Second I'd make sure they have front and rear hand brakes...IMO they can balance better than just having a coaster brake and when they're older they won't have to worry about getting a bike without a coaster brake....
The lighter the better...I wouldn't trip off a really nice bike, he's 5 right?.....He'll scratch that shit up and crash it anyway and then out grow it in a few months!...lol

I got my kids bikes a few years back. The youngest was 6 I think and I got him a Giant. It has a smaller frame than the reg ones with the 20 inch wheels. Still might be a little too big for a 5 year old. Also it has coaster brakes and hand brakes. If you need to go smaller than a 20 inch, I wouldnt spend much at all, because in a year he will out grow it. I P/U garbage for a living, and Im throwing the small ones away all the time. Does it have to be new? Craigslist?

damn, I had a hutch pro star back in the day. I think it had cw handle bars (think that was the name). Then I had a pink skyway feestlye bike. The good ole days when kids could ride all over the place and be safe.
