I got an 89 lx and wanted to find out what bolt ons i can add to get some more horsepower. I'm gunna add a 75mm throttle body and underdrive pulleys but those are the only bolt ons that i really know about to add horse power.

75mm TB is useless to you on a stock motor, granted you might have better throttle response, but thats about it. U/D pulleys are a good start, along with a nice cat-back. Throw some gears in the rear and you'll be good to go. Don't forget to ditch the stock air filter/box. [patriot]

I'm forddude510/86gt pretending to be a moderator. At first I thought it would be funny to change my name and act like a mod. Now the real mods have caught on and locked in this signature so I can't change it. I probably don't think it's funny anymore, but I like their sense of humor!

Do a search over at corral.net. There has to be hundreds of posts on "first mod". It will take you hours to read through all the posts but you won't waste your hard earned money on mistakes that many people have made before you.

gears, gears, gears, gears! One of the best first mods you can do. Then add exhaust and a 65 or 70 mm TB. [patriot]

it's completely the opposite. Worse throttle response with a larger TB...

First mods:

Cold air intake, 1 chamber flows with turn downs, off road h-pipe, cobra upper and lower intake, 3:73 gears (cause gas is cheap), 70mm throttle body, pro-50 short shifter, lowering springs, drag radials.... .... uhh those are some good 1st mods!

If it is stock here is what I would do (in order of preference)

1. K&N filter, remove air silencer, advance timing, pulleys, and tune up

2. 3:55 or 3:73 gears

3. Short shifter

4. 2 1/2 cat back, headers, h-pipe

5. Springs, shocks, rack bushings and cc-plates

6. sub frame connectors

7. rear lower control arms

8. strut tower and k-member brace

9. Intake manifold (cobra, gt-40, performer, TFS, etc), 65mm t body, 1.7 rr's, and MAF

10. ignition (coil, wires, and a box)

11. heads, cam, AFPR, injectors, and 255 fuel pump (would be easier to do 9 and 10 together)

12. blower, stroker motor, or both [Big Grin]

Agreed a 65mm TB will do you more good than the 75mm with a stock combo. However you do not have to ditch the stock air filter/box, just remove the air silencer within the fenderwell and pop in a K&N filter and your good to go. There is no difference between that setup and the CAI setup besides cosmetics. I prefer the stock look unless the motor is completely built. Might want to think about adding a bigger Mass Air flow sensor along with a new filter and TB, it would make for a nice increase.

Other good mods:
- subframes
- short shifter
- exhaust (headers, o/r-pipe/ catback)
- gears (4.10 for AOD, 3.73 for t5)
- new springs/shocks combo
- rear disc brakes
- any chassis stiffening really.
- fresh spark plugs and 9mm wires (just to keep it nice and fresh) no hp gain
- a/c delete (if you dont need a/c)

Good luck with the car. Post some pics of her [patriot]
