Check your ring end gaps! It's not good for the piston... And this was one of two... [ October 22, 2006, 08:04 PM: Message edited by: JohnB ]

At least it looks like you got it shut down before the ring land tore anything up too much

When people assemble engines rather than building them, this happens. They don't bother checking the gap in the ring. You cannot just "throw rings on pistons and stuff them in the holes"...or you'll get this. The ring needs a certain amount of clearance to ensure it all has room to "grow" when it gets hot. The engine was is a Autocross car. It sees alot of high rpms and even more heat than a straight line car.
I'm curious as to how many of the other 6 are fractured.

when i built my motor, i remember dealing with those damn rings. they break fairly easy, and using the piston ring grinder was time consuming. the first one we inserted ended up gouging the cylinder wall and we had to get it resleeved. tons of fun.

My question if it's due the lack of ring gap why is it that it's not broken where the ring gap joins and the ring stepped ends on each other?
I had a similar problem on an engine that I worked on not too long ago. Exact same breakage. Turn out to be a faulty fuel system along with too much timing. [ October 23, 2006, 06:06 PM: Message edited by: Fostang ]

The piston will break here due to it being the thinnest area of the piston (because of the flycut). I'd agree and say it's a tune issue if there was obvious detonation...but as you an see from the pics, it was running pretty fat...and the 30lb inj's/whimpy cam combo was no help.
I feel really bad for the owner, as this engine has been nothing but a problem from day one. It's a nice centerpiece in the garage now!

I would like to know how much ring gap the rings had once it's pulled apart.

On my 98 Cobra, when I took the engine apart little pieces of the ring fell out.
When I looked at the piston I saw a piece was missing, but I could not find it. I think it went out the exhaust valve because there was no metal in the oil and the cylinder wall was not scratched one bit. Here is a picture of the piston and ring
Here is the #7 cylinder that failed, hard to tell in the picture, but it was smooth as a babies bottom

Happened to my friend (not b/c of ring gaps). He chipped a quarter size peice off of one piston. When we pulled off the head to see what happened we couldn't find the missing peice anywhere. Fortunatelly for him it didn't score the cylinder walls either. Just spat it out.
He replaced the piston and got the motor back together. Of course, it died about 6 months later from "excessive boost" at the race track
