Go to the last page of this thread, there is a post mortem description by the cage fabricator, who also happens to be our tech inspector for NASA norcal.

Hey Mikee, how are you doing ?
Good job on the cage !
That k-wall is there because an RX-7 driver was killed about 4 years ago when another car did the same thing and went across the infield and hit on-coming traffic.

Those pics are why I autocross. I look forward to a full-on stitch-welded and 'caged early Mustang build, but I have another street car to finish first.
Open track definitely has lots of risk involved.

Yes there is risk involved however that was NOT an open track event.

That's true. Cars built and run to the ragged edge of performance tend to be the most unreliable. A catastrophic failure on a street car, although possible, rarely happens (unless your car is unreliable to begin with).
