I'm running 275/40/17's on 17x8" '99 Cobra rims, they seem to be too big and give a non stable feeling in the corners. They are cheap "Futura's"--"Ultra Z's"(Pep Boys... got them for free..)....Will the same size in a better/softer tire be better?...or should I go for 255/45/17's????

If you are doing serious Road racing or Auto-x. Hoosier's slick is one route, or Kumho also makes a bad ass slick for Auto-x. Either way, go to Tirerack to find these tires. And for an 8 in rim, no more than 255. You want as little side wall flex as possible.

The kumho's are good tires..275's are allright for an 8 inch rim but not recommended. I blew 2 of my nitto radials cuz i was running 18psi in them. The rim could not handle the size..
go with the kumho's 255's and you won't be dissapointed..
