I just completed a topend/ cam swap on my 94 gt. After starting I have a steady tapping 1st time doing the job. All parts replaced include new timing chain, water pump/timing cover, rocker channels, 1.6 pedestal roller rockers, Ford Racing chrome moly push rods and ford racing roller lifters soaked for 4 daus prior to installing. Runs and idles good. But do to tapping shut it down until done right. I have a ford racing shim set for rockers and need someone to complete.

Yes stock 1994-95 valve covers. But there not hitting I installed proform 1.6 pedestal rockers. I'm not to experienced on the hole zero lash before tightening to 20ft lbs in 1/2 to 3/4 turn. I torqued everything with both valves closed in the sequence of the firing order. But for peace of mind I'd like it done by someone with more experience to prevent valvetrain failure

Are you sure the roller rockers aren't hitting the stock valve covers?

Yeah pretty sure sounds like maybe rockers or lifters. Felt top of valve covers and doesn't seem to be the problem. Going to get a mechanic stethoscope to narrow it down hopefully

I have a tapping in mine, too. I bought the car off someone who built the motor prior to be getting it, but ever since i've been driving it, it's had a small tick.

I took the top end apart last weekend and did the valve lash adjustment, etc. all the same crap you just did.. and it's still doing it.

I'm confused as well.. I have trick flow valve covers so I know it's not that.

The thing was built high end, so at this point all I can figure is that either a lifter is ticking, or maybe there is wear on some cam lobes.. but that wouldn't be happening on yours.....

Interesting. I have 1.7 trick flow rockers fwiw.. but curiously only hear a tap on the drivers side.

Have you taken a wooden dowell and put it to the block/head and the other end to your ear?

Old trick, works well.. might help you narrow down which one is making the noise.

Check your lash, again.

If it's not right on, you will get a tick, or worse, less/no compression on a cylinder bc the valve isn't closing completely.. just went through this bs on my car.

Also need to be VERY SURE it's on TDC when you do all this, or it won't matter.

Turned out my noise was this, combined with a bad lifter.. or 8.

New or re-used lifters? I've seen lifters die after a cam swap...even when soaked in oil. Also check your valve lash again, did you degree the cam? shim kits help but stud mounted rr's is the only way to get it perfect...

When are you suppose to soak them in oil?
