Topic: 347 tuning questions.....Standalone, or ???

putting the finishing touches on my long term project. The car is a 95 GTS and my setup is 347 with AFR 185s, holley systemax intake (ported lower) cam is 579 lift, 30lbs injectors. After talking with a tuner in Oakdale he stated that it would be best for me to do a standalone setup due to the limitations of the ecu. He suggested that the holley efi. I'm wondering what you guys are running, and how your drivability, power, and gas mileage are. Also, what tuning shops do you recommend?

I knew there are a ton of guys running stock ecus, but I'm wondering if the stand alone is worth the money as they are not cheap

ive heard its worth it, but theres an megasquirt for mustangs that i might use or if i find a A9L ecu with the harness i might do that as well but with the megasquirt its tunable with a laptop

For a street car, the Standalone may be a bit much. I could see where a Standalone system will be beneficial to a car that will often see track use as you will want the flexibility to adjust the tune for track conditions, weather, altitude and such. For a street car, the stock ECU with a custom tune for your combination should suffice. I'm running a stock A9L with a custom tuned SCT chip. With full emissions and pump gas, conservatively tuned my supercharged 347 makes 490 RWHP. May not be mind blowing numbers with what the multi-valve and multi-cam Mod motors are putting out now, but it's more than enough for a street Fox-body. Thanks for the reply. Are you happy with the drivability? I know tons of guys have the stock ecu with custom tunes and are happy with it, but has anyone gone from that to a stand alone and seen a crazy difference in power and driveability? Any suggestions on dyno shops would appreciated also

Driveability is good and it passes smog. I don't have any experience with a stand alone system so I cannot answer you there with regards to a comparison of the two. Hopefully somebody else here can answer that question for you. [ 2015-09-01, 10:28 PM: Message edited by: S351-R ]

Here is My take with a NA setup You wouldn't have a big upside compared to a stock ecu aftermarket chip VS stand alone. If You plan on adding 20 pounds of boost down the road, plan on changing Your combo often, or just like to tinker and do all the work Yourself then go for it! I highly doubt anyone with a NA combo is going to see any crazy gains from tuning their own after a good shop does the initial tune.

I don't think you need a standalone, a stock ecu should work fine with your setup, a Holley standalone is the easiet to use and learn, I have three friends with it and I am selling my FAST setup to get a Holley standalone so I don't have to depend on someone to tune my FAST and tune myself with the Holley

You do not need a standalone. You can tune on stock ecu without an issue. The tuner at my old job has tuned multiple cars making 550-600 on A9L, A9P and A9S computers. It's not always about what the ecu can handle, it's about how you can work around those "restrictions"

Correct. Will definitely need bigger injectors. I'd recommend 60#. Used to max out 42# on HCI+charged 302s. Most of the time duty cycle would be around 95% on 10lbs.Run a stealth 340lph pump and 60# and hope your fuel lines will support the fuel.

Yeah, I know. A few things of note however, that was through the cats with full emissions hooked up, on crappy California 91 octane, at a conservative 11:1 A/F and the clutch slipping at 4500 RPMS. [ 2015-09-02, 12:41 PM: Message edited by: S351-R ]

Holley is a bit much...
get a tune with an SCT chip on a stock ECU
or if you go stand alone use a Megasquirt Plug n Play and spend only $800 for a badass stand alone which takes 5 mins to install

Get 42lb injectors with trick flows r series 90mm and a 340lph fuel pump.. That's the setup I've been told to do on my 347 stroker

Do what CornOil said to do. Get a tune with an SCT chip. Dont bother with Diablosport.. its not what it used to be.
And no offense to anybody else.. but dont listen to what people told you to do because they were "told" to do it for their setup, listen to people with real life experience like myself and Cornoil. 42s will NOT cut it on a blown 347. And I would HIGHLY recommend an SCT Big Air Mass Air Flow. Dont bother with the Mafia MAF Extender (although it would work with an SCT chip).. keep SCT MAF with SCT chip and Diablo Mafia with a Diablo chip.. just a good rule of thumb.

What if your motor is NA.. Is it ok to use 42lb

He never said his combo was going to be supercharged. 42lb injectors for his setup will be fine
