I have a 06 F150 5.4 XLT with 104k miles. This afternoon the following happened: Was cruising about 40 mph and pushed gas down to pass someone, and the RPM's kicked up, but no acceleration. Did this a couple times, then put it in "2" and it drove as expected. Put it back in drive, same thing again. Turned OD off, drove fine but would not shift above 2nd (i think) 3500 rpm at 55 mph.
Drove home a few miles away, checked ATF, it was full and clean.
Any ideas?

There is not much you can do with transmissions today. There are a couple of solenoids inside but they usually tell you when they go bad. I was troubleshooting a stumble problem on my 02 F150 for quite some time and everytime the trans was suggested, it meant a complete rebuild. Also some trucks do not have a heavy duty trans.
In the mist of my troubleshooting, I replace the TPS sensor with aftermarket unit. It was then I noticed the trans would not down shift. Bad TPS sensor out of the box! The trans no longer has a rod or linkage to tell it when to down shift, so it uses the TPS sensor. Get a Motorcraft one!

Unfortunate but likely the Trans is bad. New Ford Trans comes with a solid warranty
