The only way I've seen a smog pump go bad is that the bearing lock up.

Mine is squeaking and its driving me nuts, i think i have another one laying around. i took the other one off cause it felt like it wasn't doing anything but now i don't care if it works or not i doubt it really effects smog. [ 2014-11-12, 08:47 PM: Message edited by: Wildfire532FB ]

But does help with smog it pump extra oxygen in to cat to help burn the fuel on start ups when emissions are at highest.

i thought it tied into the exhaust after the cats though.

Nope on a mustang you have two pre cats then the down stream for the air pump then two more cats. An it will always before the cats. [ 2014-11-12, 08:55 PM: Message edited by: hurting your feelings ]

Really? I failed my smog 3 years ago because I forgot to hook up the smog pump to the h-pipe which would be the same thing as the smog pump not there and my car was 100% stock.

Maybe they looked under your car and saw it not connected so it failed the visual?
