Was looking at a few turbos and noticed that a couple of them were oil cooled. So I'm trying to understand the difference between intercooled am oil cooled.

All turbos are BOTH oil cooled AND intercooled..
The oil cools off the turbo head unit itself..
The intercooler cools down the boosted air that the turbo produces before it goes into the intake..

Some turbo's are water cooled an oil cooled.intercooler is for dropping the air temp going in to the engine which can be air to air or water 2 air. [ 2014-10-26, 10:26 PM: Message edited by: hurting your feelings ]

Its rare for someone to run a water cooled turbo on a mustang though.. especially if its a street car.. and most common intercooled setup is air to air..

I'm just pointing out that you gave the wrong information when looking for a turbo on websites the have two options oil cooled or water an oil cooled.intercooler coolers are for dropping inlet temperatures.

Well he asked the difference between oil cooled & intercooled.. so I pointed out the difference between the 2 and that the setup must have BOTH.. dont see how i gave wrong info?? if he is asking about oil cooled and intercooled then why would I bring up water cooled and confuse him? And im saying the same thing u are about intercoolers, except im saying it in simpler terms which makes it easier to understand..

Yeah.. from what I hear water cooled is more reliable than oil cooled due to oil clogging, dirty oil, etc.. but as long as you do routine oil changes & run a turbo timer, the oil cooled turbos are fine..
