I can't remember when Ford made the switch, 1985, or 1986, but they changed the oil gauge from a legit pressure gauge to a glorified dummy light. When you have more than 5-7psi of oil pressure, the needle will go to the normal zone. It will stay in the same spot regardless of what pressure the engine is actually making.
First, check the pressure with a mechanical gauge to make sure you have the proper amount of pressure and see if it really is dropping when you hit the brakes.

The gauge sending unit changed in 1989. 1969 to 1988 is the same sending unit.

I bought a new sending unit, the one on the car is pretty old anyways, too bad the gauge isn't too accurate though. I'll have time next week to install it and see.
