I'm going to be buying a used set of afr 185 heads and I was wondering how can I tell if they are in good shape or even good to use?

You can start by looking how the wall is between the valves. Then just check out the rest like you'd normally check out parts.

Yeah but they usually crack at the top then go all the way thru. But you are right it is a gamble.

Ok thanks. Now I'm confused if I should buy them I didn't see no cracks in the pics and the guy said they came off a running car

Small block Fords have a lot of valve guide issues. Some heads go 200k with no issues. Others, I have seen go bad in less than 5k miles. I personally would only buy used heads for a screaming deal.

Brand new TW 170s are 1200 but AFR 185s and TW 190s are 1600 - 1800 new...
$950 for a set of good used AFR 185's is a good deal [ 2014-05-02, 02:20 PM: Message edited by: CornOil_&_Boost ]
