I'm going to be changing my differential gasket since it's leaking. What gear oil should I use for it? It's for a 89 foxbody with 3.73s gears

We use 75-140 synthetic exclusively in our shop. All the designer oils are BS anyway. A good grade of Synthetic is all that is needed.

tom your statement that all designer oils are bs nothing could be further from the truth. when bobby unser was destroying a rear end in 1 trip up pikes peak he needed a designer oil to correct this problem. when roush needed a gear oil to handle rearend problems a designer oil was needed. briggs and stratton the largest manufacturer of air cooled racing engines had a problem was close to having to retool his engines as to many rpms and power for oil that was available a designer oil was needed. eric beull racing had the same problem no lube was available a designer oil was needed amsoil was the answer in fact bobby unser was fired from roush for telling a reporter that they were not using sponsors gear oil when thay asked mark martin if this was true he would only smile mark was very smart

So what you are saying is a street driven car needs these incredibly expensive oils that these guys use. From what our experience is we do not see any advantage of oils whatsoever. To a degree!!! We build 1600 wheel HP vehicles and use conventional EP oils with no issues whatsoever. What type of oils are they and what is there applications. Our oil reps differ with your thoughts on everyday street driven cars. I am sure a certain application will require special oils as well. Honda & Corvettes requires special oils for there final drives and so does other manufacturers.I think this is for EPA fuel numbers?? I personally do not know the chemical ingredients of the oil as i am not a petroleum engineer. Please explain the difference i will pass it on to my oil reps. If they have a better product commercially available i will have to bust there stones about it. But we are having no issues with our conventional off the shelve oils. Enlighten me on these special oils and prices!! And there advantages. Most oils are going over to synthetics as i understand from servicing late model cars and trucks. As the matter of fact FORD is very critical of the use of synthetics in there F450 final drives. I know it is to pinch out higher fuel economy but the axles do not grenade from lack of designer oils. Once again explain these oils you have my attention. Thanks

Tom what 1600 hp engines you build? Where what shop? I bet it famous too huh? Google Amsoil, plenty of research that shows synthetic will out last conventional and keeps a engine cleaner longer.

I agree with the statement that for our street cars a good synthetic 75w-140 will be just fine. A typical car may see it's gear oil changed maybe twice in it's lifetime. So I see no reason to go discount on gear oil since the cost of replacing gears isn't cheap. IMHO
