A 4cyl t5? Just isn't worth the break down, the one time you roast the tires, BAAM you'll be wishing it was a v8 tranny. If your gunna drive it like grandma then go ahead.

I had a 4cyl T5 in my 89 5.0 with 3.73's. 1st gear was a waste of time like 0-5mph, and would spin tires everywhere. I raced a guy with a v8 T5 with 3.55's & I was shifting into third before he shifted to 2nd.

Gotta have stock gears to run this trans, with 273 gears in the rear the way a 4banger trans is geared it's almost like the car has 373s,I beat the shit out of my 4cyl trans in a fox coupe I had and it was fine, out lasted the motor actually..you must use a early 80s DIESEL Ford ranger pilot bearing to work with the 302..

you sure you had 373s? Idk how that worked man I had stock gears and in 5th on the freeway @70mph I was easy 3k rpm..with 373s and the way a 4cyl trans is geared the car would max itself out in a few hundred yards lol

Yup, positive they were 3.73's. When I had the 3.73's installed at west coast differential I had no clue that I had a 4cyl T5 in my car. It was also my first 5.0, so I didn't know much about them yet. It would spin the tires 1st through 3rd all day with only mild bolt ons. Topped out around 120ish if I remember. Found that out when a Honda Prelude I was racing on the freeway in the middle of the night caught up to me after quite a ways since he had a little more top speed. It was absurd & actually was one of the reasons I crashed/rolled that car. Downshifted, got sideways, hit a curb, rolled the car. All cause the guy ahead of me smashed his brakes for no reason while going around a big curve on the freeway.
