Ok so I have a 92 5.0 with bbk headers h-pipe no cats e-cam 70mm tb.and everything else is pretty much stock.. As I was cruising on the freeway my car shuts off out of no where no battery light on or anything... I down shift to 4th and car starts back up... (first time) 2nd time it does the same thing but after if say about 30 miles.. And this time I drop down to 4th nothing then down to 3rd and finally starts... Yes still on the freeway... 3rd time it happens about another 20 or so miles later and this time it won't start not even after down shifting to 2ND!!! I coast if the freeway and it fires right back up... When it shuts off I hit the gas but it just bogs like if I have no gas.... Usually when the car dies any car and every cars battery light would turn on to let you know you have no power but mine didn't.... So I drove from Vallejo back to sac and not once did it shut off again... I was told possibly my alternator or my fuel pump is going out... Any tips??

check your fuel cut off switch and TFI module. My car did the same exact thing, so we replaced the fuel pump, which didnt work. My cut off switch had a bad contact causing it to get hot, so we by passed it and the problem went away. A few weeks later the car did the same thing in commute traffic. After some checking the problem disappeared again, so I ask a friend if he's seen this before. He said to have the module tested, did that and bought a new one. No problems since.

I guarantee its the contacts in the ingnition switch NOT the tumbler where the key goes in but there is a switch under the plastic on the steering column it has a metal rod that switches ON/OFF/AUX you can replace it of I like to take two zip ties and wrap it around the column to hold the contacts tight

Same thoughts......especially when passed owners or current owners have wired in gauges etc. without enough thought bout the amount of amperage that particular circuit was made to handle from factory. Ignition switches. Head lamp switches. Turn signal combo switches and all the connectors take the abuse.......FIRE risk....!!!!! It all starts with a good electrical system....and then test fuel pump pressures. Ignition spark....module. etc ![[patriot]](graemlins/patriot.gif) [ June 16, 2012, 02:21 PM: Message edited by: dvuspny ]

The contacts on the ignitionare yiu talking about the small black wire? If so it looks like it had a good connection but ill zip tie around the column it is just dangling around the plastics but the only thing that was connected in my car was a kill switch and Icould turn the key off and still drive the car but ill check the module also thanx for the input guys!! Very very much appreciated

The small black wire is not what we're talkin about. You will see roughly 15-20 wires just below the ignition lock. The passenger side of your steering column. The parts that this harness plugs into is your ignition switch. These wires generally get tapped into ten ways from Sunday. This is the first concern. This allows resistance.amperage.and excessive heat in the wires and the plastic connector that houses all these wires. The melts and distorts after some time and allows wire terminals. connectors to move around. Now poor connections begin and fire risks begin! Age use alone will also cause the ignition lock and ignition switch wear and tare. ![[patriot]](graemlins/patriot.gif)

open the plastic around the steering column take it out there ia a plastic box that looks like it attached to the strrering column it has little hooks that hold it in place when u turn the key on it moves a rod that goes into this box it 1"x2" long the box gets loose thats what i use a ziptie to hold it firm to the colomn these car are old and after starting them for the last 20yrs that part gets loose ie driving ur jerkin issues like droping the tranny into 4th and it turn on " your sigs symptoms are as if your driving and you turn the key off" its that for sure. Bad fuel pump is usually no starting and no psi very easy to diagnose if you have a psi gauge on ur fuel line and if you dont have that then just listen for the fuel pump prime injector fill and the pump makes a noise that is loud with the radio off [ June 16, 2012, 02:49 PM: Message edited by: triple b ]
