Im in the process of building a 306 from a shortblock wich consists of stock polished crank, stock style forged rods, probe SRS forged pistons(10471-030 for twisted wedge heads, trick flow 170 twisted wedge 58cc track heat heads with come 1.6 roller rockers, Trick Flow stage 2 Camshaft, weiand excellarator intake and a quick fuel 650 carb. 3.55 gears, and a t5 in a 64 ford Ranchero.
So I am building this 306 as my first motor of my own and therefore just want it to be optimized. The machine shop that put the shortblock together decided to put in a dome top piston when I told them I wanted a 10-10.5 compression, in 91 octane street motor. Probe list's that piston as 11.4-1 compression with a 58cc head wich seemed to high for 91 to me. My friend who works for a local speed shop recomended me a super thick(.075") MLS head gasket. I bought them as the maching shop said it would bring me back down to a much more street friendly 10.25-1. THEN i learned about quench..... what would be the most cost effective, yet best option for me at this point? Or am I just over thinking this in a light, already overpowered car? What compression do you guys run on 91 octane with a CARBURETOR? [ May 21, 2012, 09:26 PM: Message edited by: tad2786 ]

get different heads if you want the quench i zero decked my block and my quech was perfect with a .041 headgasket little tricks make power not alot so is it worth it to you.....but it going in a ranchero not a drag car so i would just use the thick headgaskets and be do you will be happy either way not like your shooting for 10sec 1/4 mile to be honest its hard to get a perfect quench you measure all the pistons in/out the hole i average a couple out and a few in its was a wash thus i call my motor zero decked but in actual life some are out the hole and some in....dude just run it and if you want more power lol go to a different head gasket thats what i do as long as the piston and valve have clearence and 91 is doing good for your compression [ May 21, 2012, 09:51 PM: Message edited by: triple b ]

I agree with you on that point maybe I can have the combustion chambers and ports opend up a bit later on down the road and throw on a thinner head gasket. Bought the heads to go on a stock motor that why I went with the 58cc chamber. Don't want to get rid of them now if I can help it. THANKS

those heads will be easy for you to sell or trade for the bigger chamber ones if you need to

Mill the dome of the pistons the needed amount and zero deck the motor.
Run a vacuum advance dizzy to help tame the motor at part throttle and light load.
