It's a 89 lx. Car gets a misfire randomly then goes away. Feels like someone pulls a spark plug wire and loses all power. Not sure what it can be. Cap and rotor look good changed the plugs. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks
Update. Changed cap rotor cleaned the Maf sensor, and it's still doing it. I'm running fuel injector cleaner again. Maybe it's that dirty ... Happens random. Only other things I can think of now is bad injector or injectors, distributor or ?????... Kinda running out of ideas.
6/12- Ran fuel injector cleaner twice. Ran real good now it's back again. Usually happens when I punch it from 1st-2nd. Maybe it floods itself? It's weird... Fuel pressure is at about 37. A little lean but seems more responsive at that level. [ June 12, 2012, 07:41 PM: Message edited by: Pure Stang ]

do a cylinder balance test. takes about 5 minutes then you can rule out the injectors hopefully
jumper wire the EEC test port like your gonna do a KOER test(might as well do a KOEO and check those codes) , but then when you start it, after the test starts, jab the throttle to get it rev to about 3000
then it will do the test.
if you get a 1-9 then all is good. otherwise it will give you the cylinder(s) that are weak
also what plugs ? and what gap
you should be using stock coppers NO PLATINUM or other funky stuff
gap them about .046" NOT .052"

Car had platinums and I put regular autolites. They are gapped correctly. I'll run some test or have someone do it when I get the chance.

Fuel filter is changed new cap and rotor. I would like to try that msd box idea, but it's random. I won't know if it works unless I drive it around a little. It may take 1min to find out or a couple days ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

Like mentioned above you may want to run a cyl ballance test. If you dont know what cylinder is dropping out (if its consistent), it can be rather hard to pinpoint. I would recommend that when it acts up, either pull a plug wire or injector clip to find the cylinder that has the miss. Once you know that you will be able to fix it allot quicker. If could be an injetor issue. I've had cars where when the injector heats up the internal resistance goes up, causing the ECU driver to shut down to protect itself.

The ignition pick-up inside the distributor can cause random mis-fire issues. Remove the cap and rotor and check that the pick-up is not broken or loose and that the exciter ring is also not loose. Some of the common issues I've seen is that the spot weld that attaches the exciter ring to the distributor drive shaft is cracked or broken allowing the exciter ring to wobble. This can lead to a poor or incorrect ignition pick-up signal resulting in a misfire. [ June 21, 2012, 07:40 PM: Message edited by: S351-R ]
