Failed smog today because of and EVAP System FAIL. The tech said the leak is in the line between the canister and the gas tank. Can I replace? If so any eas way. Do I have to drop the gas tank. I have heard of smoke tests. If I find the leak how to I repair? CLAMP? I would rather just run a new line but now sure. Look in the manual and can't find the path. Also my check engine light never comes on I was failed on that too since it should come on when I turn the key. Bulb replacement. Thanks. 89 5.0 GT

Anyone? Researched online a bit but no luck. No one has replaced this line. My fuel cap test passed. The test from the tank to canister did'nt. Little help here.

take a look at the canister in the engine bay, most likely the leak is right where the hose plugs into the canister because there's a 90* bend right there, can probably get away with just wrapping the split in the hose with electrical tape.

or your gas tank filler neck seal. those are always cracked. if that still doesnt help, i have a special tool that will find any leak on your car for your evap for 50 bucks.

The smog tech should of pinched the Evap hose at the charcol canister ( before the purge flow solenoid). He found the leak when doing the evap test. Having said that, Your leak is most likely the Fuel tank filler neck. The best thing is to take the car to a shop that has a smoke machine and let them "smoke" the fuel system to find the source. You can replace hose after hose and never know if you acually fixed the problem untill you go and get it smogged.

check the peice of hose on the passenger side under body were the plastic hose meets the metal one. they are connected with a small rubber hose. make sure that hose is not cracked, broken or missing.

This.
Exactly what I wrote in ur other thread. Don't try and reinvent the wheel. Avoid time and headaches and diagnose it right.

Thanks for the replies. Its going to cost $95 to do a somoke test. I feel like I could replace all the hoses or fuel neck filler neck gasket for much less. Also if my filler neck was bad would'nt I fail the gas cap pressure test, which passed.

During a smog test the gas gap is removed from the car, and tested on a separate machine, while that is off they pinch the evap hose in the engine bay and insert a pressure tester in the filler hole and pressure test the gas tank / evap system.
they are 2 completely different things being tested.

Spend the money and smoke test it. Or take it to LMC and let the students do it for free or close to free. What if u replace the filler neck, the lines, and the o ring gasket for the pump, and after all that u find out u have a small crack in the top of the tank? ur gunna be fuckin pissed lol. Best to diagnose it instead of throwing parts at it. That's my $.02

Call LMC bro! The worst they will say is no, but I doubt they will. Community colleges like taking in customer cars to give students exposure to real life repairs, because it doesn't cost the college anything. They are insured in case anything happens to ur car, and u have nothing to lose but everything to gain from it.
Ps 95 bucks is nothing. My shop charges like 120 for diagnostic

It ending up being the vent valve gasket. Had to drop the tank but was not as bad as I thought. System passed. Thanks.
