Topic: 5.0 starting issue

So my 88lx just took a dump on me. I can hot start (from the solenoid), but when I turn the key all the lights blink, and then they all shut off. Mind you I changed the ignition switch recently plus the altenator and starter are fairly new. Where do I start cafords fam bam?

It could be a corroded wire on battery or bad ground.

Do a voltage drop on ground and + side of wire.

if u have high resistance in the battery power or gorund side, how would he be able to jump the solenoid and have it work? im inclined to think if its not alarm related it may have something to do with the new ign switch. try and play with the ignition switch position ever so slightly to see if u can find a sweet spot in the key on engine off position or the cranking position. it could be that when u turn the key to that sweet spot u have continuity, but it fails when u hit the switches natural resting positions. if so u have a faulty switch, or (ive actually never replaced an ignition switch on a fox so not sure if this applies) it is not indexed correctly.

Battery look good, wires are alright and ground is tight.

by wearing meachanics gloves and taking a long screwdriver to bothends of the solenoid.lol and I was thinking that it could be this new ignition switch but I want to make sure. When I turn to the on position, everything lights up with good power, soon as I turn it to run, it just dies as if some took a battery terminal off.

Check your fusible links coming off of the starter relay solenoid.

I meant that as in if u have high resistance in the power or ground side of the battery, u would have either slow starter operation or none at all. To do a voltage drop test take a voltmeter and measure from the battery positive post to the terminal at your starter solenoid. You are basically checking for high resistance without needing exact resistance values. U can also do this test from the negative side to the body and engine grounds. If ur meter reads more then .02 volts, u have higher than normal resistance in the circuit. If it reads a negative number, u have the leads backwards lol

Same happened to myride couple years ago,i replaced ignition switch $25 any kragen or auto zone, dnt kno the name but its in the steering column right below ignition switch $40, and solenoid $20 all at once. that did it for me. Im sure all of it wasnt bad just didnt feel like doing it twice.

not sure if its been said have you checked the signal wire at the starter sol to make sure the voltage isnt getting to the sol and just not activating it? i always like to work backwards when diagnosing electrical. once again i read through the post but maybe i missed something lol
Edit: reread the post sounds like it died during driving, then i agree that its probably not the sol, are the lights going out when you are in run or in the crank position? does it help or hurt the situation if you were to jiggle the wires coming out the ignition switch with the key in the run position ( not cranking) if you see any flickering or anything id start there if not you may want to break out the volt meter or test light and see where the voltage stops. also sometimes you can clean the terminals on that ignition switch if they get gummed up but i thought i read that you just replaced it not that long ago and it worked after the install . sorry for the long post [ August 07, 2011, 03:25 AM: Message edited by: 89foxstang ]

The problem is from the key ignition to the solenoid, no need to go further down. Being that u put the ignition in the on position so all lights are on,then u pop your hood, place screwdriver against both post terminals, and whala! Correct. So the ignition is working, its btween the piece in the strering column, take it out andcheck if it a lil burnt. Checkpik n pull for if an original solenoid is under $10 bucks if it is then change that out first, just so u buy the cheaper stuff first

I would def test to make sure the part is bad before just changing parts, just check to make sure you are getting voltage to the solenoid when the key is in the crank position if you need to know how to Check for it with a test light clip to ground take the test light and touch it to the signal wire end have some one turn the key to the START position and see if it lights up if so your solenoid is bad, no voltage then it's either in the wiring or it could be the clutch safety switch check to see if you can bypass the safety switch (just use a wire to jumper the terminals ) if you get voltage to the start sol after jumpering the safety switch then it's the safety switch. But we still haven't heard from the op whether it died during running or just wouldnt restart , or if it's an auto or stick .Lmk

89foxstang is correct (If automatic could be neutral safety switch, try putting car in neutral instead of park and check for start) The wire he is refering to is the small red/light blue striped wire which pushes on over the stud, this should have power when turned in "start" position.
Also noticed aftermarket alarm installed, possible ignition interupt from alarm. wire is usually cut at switch and loops through alarm. remove this and put factory wire ends back together that were cut. [ August 07, 2011, 11:57 PM: Message edited by: Musttanguy ]

osnap!! Gettn my foxbodys confused, my 2.3 auto, just change the solenoid. But not w/ a kragen solenoid they really do makem cheap. It happened to my 50 5spd too aswell and my clutch safety switch never worked.
