I need help deciding which gears will work best for me on my new project that i just picked up. The car is an auto 90 Gt. The car is all stock right now but will soon see some mods but want to do the rear end and gears first. I also drive the car from san jose to modesto during the week.

It's an auto not a manual. Therefore you'll be revin out 4th with 410s. My friend had an auto with 373s. It was perfect. Still held a decent rpm and speed on the freeway. 390s would be the max I'd gear a daily driven auto.

Ok thanks for the input. 3.73's is what i'm going to go with. If i'm not satisfied then guess i'll be stepping it up to the 3.90's.

Just go with the 4.10s youll be glad you did. I wouldve gone with them in my car but i would have a really short first gear (5spd). Autos are perfect for 4.10s

I went from stock to 4.10s in my auto fox gt and loved it but then started drivin about 20 miles to my job so it was killin my gas mileage and plus the revved up engine was getting annoying so switche to 3.73s and I shoulda got these to begin with

If im not mistaken gears do not affect gas mileage, and if youre auto go 4.10s and dont look back. Autos need the extra bang trust me. You'll be fine on the freeway

they dont affect gas mileage? Tell me that having 410s over stock gearing wont affect your mpg on the freeway going 65-70. so your sayingyou get the same mpg at 2300 rpm and 2800 rpm for ( using those rpms as an example.) id take that bet with you

I just went from 4.10s in auto and swapped to 5 speed and now in 3.55s (IRS swap). Gas mileage is better now with the 3.55s but not much. Depends how you drive [ August 05, 2011, 01:44 PM: Message edited by: Rio1999GT ]

Im just paraphrasing what I heard and read over the last several years from well known tech heads in this forum ;-) I believe Blind and JohnB would agree. It all depends how you drive. Folks who get gears are more inclined to drive harder and faster. If you treat it just like you did before you shouldn't notice a difference, at least this is what was explained to me. take it or leave it..makes no difference to me. thank you!! ^
if your not driving on the freeway at all, you may keep the same mpgs in the city. otherwise say bye bye to your gas milage and hello to gas consumption ![[patriot]](graemlins/patriot.gif)

Stock vs 4.10s, yes...you'd see little, if any MPG difference. 3.73's vs 4.10's, you won't. And I'll take that bet any day.
I've said it plenty of times...the only thing that effects fuel economy is the right foot. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)
