1. Most people think any 289 with a 4 barrel is a hipo, they are not. Hipo rods, heads and blocks are different from normal 289s.

2. What does "it is a screamed" mean?

3. How much money do you have to work with and what is your goal? People can throw out suggestions all day long, but without a budget and an idea of what you want, it's hard to tell you what works for the money you have. A 300hp combo is going to be very different from a 400hp combo.

Freshen up existing 289 or sell it to finance a used roller motor and do the same (add in $80) for new crank pulley (3 bolt to 4 bolt) and $100 for new flywheel or flexplate) rebuilt shortblock with new rings/bearings crank polish, engine gasket set, steel oil pump, arp oil pump drive, double roller timing set $550

Edelbrock e streets $860

OTS cam and lifter package (thumpr cam would be cool for flat tappet) or new OTS roller cam with existing used roller lifters $180

Head bolts $65

Rockers $100-250 (used price to new price)

Pushrods $80

Rpm air gap intake $100-250 (used to new)

MSD billet vacuum advance dizzy $100-300 (used to new)

650hp series holley $125-450 (used to new)

HV fuel pump $50-150

Headers $100-400 (low end to high end)

Thing will run great, even take a small nitrous shot if you went with the 5.0 roller motor suggestion

If it's a legit K code, it's worth some $$$. Since you said it came out of a '65, is it a 5-bolt bellhousing pattern or a 6-bolt?

Either way, I'd sell it if it's complete and a legit K code. You can easily get $1000 for a complete rebuildable engine.

I'd take the $3k from your engine budget and build the engine Turbo50 suggested. Then take the $1k and put it into the rest of the car. What transmission are you running? If it's an auto, you may want to look into a new torque convertor and having it freshened up.

3 grand is more than enough to build that small block , and dont sell trade or get rid of that motor, great runner. and worth a bit of money to the right person, and if built right youll be more than happy.

if that is a real K code motor it is worth more left alone and sold. if you rebuilt it your are getting rid of a wanted motor. If you are not going to use it as stock sell it and build something else

+1 The K motor made it's 271hp with high compression from small chamber heads (52cc) and a solid lifter cam. If you replace all that stuff with aftermarket parts, you don't really have a K motor any more. It's just another 289. The value of that motor is really in the casting numbers of someone looking to build a correct restoration. Also, if it's a 5-bolt block, it's not going to bolt up to you existing '68 C4. You'll need a new bell housing.

A well built 306 or 347.

Or a well built 351.....all roller motors as a preference.
