ok ive got a 96 ford contur the timing belt idler pulley snapped in half (frewheeling motor or so im told) and timing belt jumped, when i went to put the new one on i realized there were no points of reference on the cam sprockets(its a 4cyl) or any indication of timing marks whatsoever there is a place at the back of the cams have a slot for a tool to line them up but is it that easy line it up get the pistons at tdc and on with the belt....the only other maybe reference point is there is an e on the back of the cam sprockets that might be the marks to line up but then the slots in the back of the cams arent aligned hit me up if possible 7073345444 or 9169346207 dan [Confused]

you need the special tool that goes in the slots on the back of the cams, thats the only way. when you get ready to put the locking tool in the cams make sure the valves for number one cylinder are all closed. put the lower timing cover on the block and put slide the blancer back on there should be some reference points on them to get hte crank lined up correctly.

(disclaimer. its ben a while since i have done one of these cars and i am going off memory hope this helps man)

there is a special tool you need. long bar that goes on the back of the cams and a timing pin to find tdc. You line the cams up independent of the sprockets. Its an odd setup

the tools cost about $30 online. I have the tools if you want to borrow them. I just did the timing belt in my focus not too long ago.
