So for some back ground. I have a 69 mustang with a 69 302 short block. The top half, heads, intake fuel rails, computer, basically the top half out of a 86. That makes it a speed density car. Side note, have a 90 comp, wires, and Mass air to change it over in the next week or so.

This is what was going on: I have changed the intake gaskets, the ones on the heads and the ones in the front and rear and the one between the top and lower intake. Oh ya the ring on the distributor too. After the change it was leaking out of the water ports on one of the heads, out of the engine, not into the engine. Car was still running. So I redid the whole thing all over again. Made sure to silicone all around the water ports on the heads this time.

Now for the problem, wont start.

This is what I have done. I set the timing by:

1: Using the timing marks on the bottom pulley to get close to TDS(Top Dead Center).

2: Then pulled plug one, standing in front of the car the first plug on the left side. Also the one that is labeled "1" on distributor and followed the wire.

3: Put my finger in the whole to make sure it was TDS and not 180 off. I can fill the top of the cylinder their.

4: Set the Distributor making sure that the pin, arm,what ever it is called lined up with the "1" marked on the cap. Yes I made sure after I set it buy pulling the cap and lining it up.

5: Put the plug and wire back into cylinder one.

6: Cranked the engine. No dice. I hear it turning over, I can smell gas, and I checked for spark.

The best I can get is almost started, but wont fire. Tried turning the Distributor a little one way and then a little the other. And I also repeated steps 1-6 over a dozen times and still no dice.

I checked all of my connections and I believe they are all connected. I did not pull the injectors out of the rail just the intake. I did pull the injector wires though, and made sure they all went back in. Like I said I can smell gas though; on the cylinder too.
If anyone has any advice please help me out. I think that it might, Might, be a combo of old plugs and the timing being a little off, but it did run before I took it apart the second time.


Any help would be great!

you need to make sure your not 180 degrees off (exhaust stroke) also when you say number one front left side are you talking about your left looking at the engine from the front of the car or the front one on the left (driver side of hte vehicle)?

blownsnake is right, i believe on Fords, cylinder #1 is on the passenger side in the front and the Chubrolets on the driver side. Also, make sure you routed the wires on the distributor in the correct direction (i believe counter clock wise, at least on the BBF)

its either those problems above or like mentioned, 180* off

counter clockwise is correct.

Remember that number one will be the cylinder on the passengers side front as you are standing in front of the car looking at the windshield.

Also when setup from the factory #1 almost points to the 11/12 o clockish position towards the upper intake plenum.

Thanks. Made sure it was TDS by pulling the plug and can fill the top of the piston. When standing in the front of the engine it is the set of plugs on the left, as in plug one.

After thinking about it over night, could a have a old plugs with the combo of timing not being 100% on making it not want to start?

I also did finnnnnnaly get it started at real high rpm, holding the gas at about half. Ran like crap and couldn't get it to idle, then died. So knowing that I know it is not like a stretched timing chain then. But as a side note, drained the battery all the way last night so got to charge it now.

if you have the motor 180* out cylinder number 1 will still be at the top on its exhaust stroke.
