so im gonna be doin a h/c/i swap in the next 3 mnths n i been debating on whether or not 2 rebuild the lower half of the motor,this is gonna b my 1st mod so id like 4 it 2 b done rite so guys lets hear your opinions on this lil project of mines!!! AND MITE I ADD H/I ARE GT40S THAT WILL B PORTED,AND IM TRYIN 2 DO A BUDGET BUILD,SO LETS TRY N KEEP THAT IN MIND!!91 GT.

Lik u said if u do it the right way might as well rebuild it and if ur going to do that might as well bore it to a 306 whil its apart the put it together with al ur parts nd enjoy!

rite now intill new years DSS RACING is havin a spacial on there 331/347 BULLET short block for only 1295.99 comes with forged pistons,forged i beams,and a forged stroker crank thats hella cheap for a fully built 331/347 short block

Do comperssion check to see where You are at. If the engine has'nt been beat to hell it is probably more than strong enough.

Once you get those heads off, you'll be able to tell if it needs a rebuild. Do a compression test though first.

might as well rebuild the short block do it right the first time or you will be doing it later

id get a fresh short block and then you wont have to worry about it later on even if your high miler block is still good.sometimes the budget builds end up costing more.

so if i ran the gt40(w/portwork)setup,TFS1 and bored the motor over .30-.40 what u guys think i mite b spending(ballpark)?and what type of power gains would b made??

why do a compression test frist
Because the heads need to be on the engine to do the compression test. The compression test gives you an idea on the condition of the piston rings.
If the compression test shows below 140psi or if the compression differs more than 10-15 psi when comparing the cylinder results I would say rebuild. When the heads come off you will be looking at the cylinder walls for scratches. [ December 28, 2010, 04:40 AM: Message edited by: Secnd2nun64 ]
