My battery light came on 2 days ago. The car drives good and starts up rite away. My voltage was 11.9 at idle. I disconected the battery while the car was on and it keep idleing good. Ther is a wierd noise and smell coming from the altnator. Could the altenator be bad? Help please!!

Should have more than 11.9 at idle. First check the 20 amp fuse for the alt then if that's not it go ahead and remove your alt and take it to be tested. If it's a bad alt I would look into using this time to get a newer 3g alt swap. The old style 5.0 Alts are notorious for causing too much current for the oem connector and melting the wires coming off the alt and causing serious electrical fires. Tho I've never had it or seen it happen the 3g is a better upgrade for amplifires upgraded ignition systems fuel pumps

alt. is going out or it's dead already. at idle it should be close to 14V. when the alt. is not charging the battery, it's around 12V. loosen the belt and see if you can spin the alt. pulley easily. if it spins with little to no friction then it's toast. Wow are you serious? From what I know you are never suppose to disconnect the battery while the car is running. you could fuck some serious shit up.
If you didn't you got lucky this time.

Never had anyone telll me that....I've disconected the battery before on various cars due to battery lights on friends car and just the other day on my mother n laws van since I don't have a volt meter n that's just my way of checking to see if the alternator good or not

That's a quick way to test your alternator. If you disconnect the battery and the car dies you need a new alternator. If you still havin charging issues even if the car is running wit out the battery it means your battery might be bad.

that's fine on an old carb'd car with no computers.
on a modern car that has a computer controlling the engine, the transmission, the climate control, etc etc disconnecting the battery can spike the system, hooking it back up causing a load spike, etc, the dangers of causing MORE damage to the car FAR outway the convenience of not having to use a $2 dvm to check the voltage on the battery as compared to the voltage on the post on the back of the alternator.
shit, take the battery and alternator to an auto parts store and they'll test them for FREE if you can't afford a $2 dvm.

disconnecting the battery is fine. Its not like you take it off and go inside and have lunch or something. you pop it off, if it dies or doesn't die, you know where to start. Then put it back in there when your done. I've done it to a ton of cars and RARELY were they not fuel injected

back in the day when there were external regulated alternator pulling th pos cable off to check was the easiest way to check it on late model cars when you pull the pos cable off to check it will heat and burn the diodes in the alternator. should always just take it somewhere where they can do a proper load test. theres nothing worse than chasing a charging problem when you cause another with out even knowing.
