195 is perfect for a stock car, that is the factory temp and everything is engineered to work at that temp.

+1 your housing should be replaced its really rusty, and i recommend flushing the coolant system when youre done

Just clean the thermostat off the best you can with a wire brush and then soak the housing/thermostat in some ATF or oil for a couple hours to break up the rust. Then put the housing on the ground and hit the thermostat with a hammer and it should break loose. May take a couple good wacks. No need to be gentle with it, just hit the actual thermostat and not the housing. Then use a wire brush and clean the housing up. Give it fresh coat of pain and your good to go.

i picked up a new t stat housing and i have a new t stat...question, is the t stat supposed to be pressed into the housing, seems like its not form fitting...or is this normal for a snug fit once pressed in?? thnx [ November 19, 2010, 04:03 PM: Message edited by: fredfifty ]

spring side towards the motor like your pic in here, with the gasket on top of the thermostat between it and the intake manifold.
thermostat isn't a snug fit into the housing, no.

i bought the summit housing like the one in the link posted above, and i picked up a balanced 195 mr gasket t stat...should be all good right? because i tried to put it together (correctly) and it seems hard to fit in there.
