will a 1987 couger distributor with a efi 5.0 (standard firing order) work the same on a 1989 mustang 5.0 ho engine? I'm guessing yes, but I want a second opinion. Everything looks the same
tfi and all. thanks

I think that has a cast iron cam gear which wont work with the steel roller cam in your 5.0 h.o.Is the cougars motor an h.o. or non-h.o.?

Really?its none HO. intake faces the same way as mustang. I thought since it was fuel injected and 1987-just standard firing order it's has a hydralic roller lifter cam. I guess I can change the gear. Can somone verify it has a cast gear?
Thanks for the heads up

is the cam in the motor a roller? if the motor is a roller cam, it will work.. the ho firing order is a 351 firing order... that doesn't mean nothing.. if it is a roller it will work.. if it's a flat tappet it won't... the steel gear on the cam will tear apart the iron gear..

Im not sure if its a roller but I assume it is,
since it was in a 1987 5.0 efi engine. I did see it was standard firing order. but the dizzy looks Identical to the 5.0 ho's.

It should NOT be a roller motor.Non H.O. motors are flat tappet hydraulic. If you use that distributor you will strip the gear in no time, spread shavings all through your motor and end up stranded somewhere. Not like thats ever happened to me [Wink] ,LOL!

Thanks 5.0daddy.

The gears looks the same. I had my 5.0 ho distributor out, and compared the two units.
I sanded a spot on both gears and used my 10x loop to inspaect. one was flat, the other had "perocity" or micro craters. I'll take your word for it being cast. Now can I take the gear off my H.o. distributor and replace the cast one with it?

You can try but its hard without a press. If you hammer it off you might damage it.I would recommend either the correct distributor or have a machine shop press off/on the right gear.Although i have done it myself before, the gear was wearing funny so i got another stock distributor.
