Hey guys,
Well the bad news is I was gone for a while and some low-life tried to steal my car. I originally thought they busted the lock cylinder as after I charged the battery and hooked it up, the car was stuck in a KEY ON condition. It turns out that they pryed the ignition switch off the column and tried to manually operate the switch...lucky for me the battery was dead!
Anyways, I removed the key lock cylinder from the car, but now I can't get it back in! I think that the linkage for the switch might be out of sync or something as it will slide in a little ways, but will not fully seat.
Looking into the bottom of the lock cylinder housing, I can see the little brass retaining clip that the end of the cylinder is supposed to slide into. That appears to be oriented correctly, but there's no way to tell for sure. Also, it looks like that whole housing was kind of jacked up from the force of prying the switch off. All the manual instructions say is: turn lock cylinder to run position, depress locking pin, slide into housing, and turn key to off making sure that locking pin engages in housing. Hmmmm...sounds easy to me, but for some reason it won't go in!
Am I going to have to replace the whole steering column?? I thought about getting one from pick n' pull, but I have no idea how I'll get the lock cylinder out of the donor column without being able to turn it to the run position. Does anyone know if that whole housing is available to purchase from anyone? Better yet, is that housing even removable from the column?
At this point, I just want to get the car operational so I can drive it to a storage facility and keep it there until I move to a place with a garage. I guess I could use the ignition switch they pried off the car and try to just operate that to get it to start.
What should I do??
Kyle
