What would be considered too high and why? What problems might I run into? Motor is 331-s trim.

First off what is your oil pressure and what would lead you to believe the pressure is too high. What is your bearing gap on your crank and rods?

cold idle 80psi/ warm idle 30-40psi warm cruising 65-70psi.
Machine shop wanted me to run a high pressure pump. Bearings are speed pro coated bearings gaps are rods 2.5 thousands and about 2.75 on the crank, the shop that did the machine work is very reputable and builds bad ass engines , when he told me high pressure I wasn't so sure but he ensisted on it.

Compared to mine its high! Although, im running a standard volume pump. Mine about 60cold, 20/25 idle, and 40-50 driving.

It doesn't seem to be catastrophically high but I don't agree with the high volume oil pump but that is one mans opinion. The bearing gaps are spot on. I think your preasures should be down by about 10 psi across the board

Actually yer cold idle seems good. I just can't see why no standard volume pump. But I've learned the every mechanic/builder has his own version of right which doesn't make anybody opinion wrong it's just what works for them

ditto with the above post. there is a high presure and high volume pumps. my cleveland has 80 on cold start up and drops 10 to 15 when warm, been like that for 6 years

He wanted me to run the high pressure not high volume, I am just worried it's too much. How would a bearing wash with too high of pressure? I have heard that and can't understand how it would happen?

wouldnt think you have high oil pressure with that much main clearance on your mains.
you can run into bearing erosion issues with too much oil pressure on such a small (less than 3 inch) main bearing but that is from what I READ I havent seen this happen yet with my own eyes.
Id be happy with it.

Dan I have heard that too but like you I have never seen it. It would be interesting to see just for the experience though I hope it doesn't happen to any of us

guess i will put some more milage on it and see if it drops any, will you typically loose a bit of pressure when the motor is fully broken in?

I wouldnt worry about it to be honest.
Did you use a full groove bearing in it?

oil pumps have a bypass valve to prevent to much oil pressure
To much pressure can cause the bearings to hydralic.
But I doubt that'll happen unless you have a modified hi psi pump. Meaning a mod to the bypass- adding extra shims or washers to keep the valve closed . Extra shims add load on the bypass spring resulting in a spike in pressure.
