89 LX, heater just blows luke warm air. when started cold, temp gauge is off scale---after a few, it rises maybe a 1/4 inch or so---which one would think is normal. Problem is it never gets hot. Would a thermostat stuck open cause this ?? thanks jim

Thermostat is a possibility. Have you swapped out the heater hoses recently? If so, they may be backwards.

Nope, no hose changes. actually, not much maintenance at all on a 340,000 mile motor!!! things are just starting to go bad.......for no apparent reason______lol.

Heater core is clogged. Pull the larger hose, check the restrictor, make sure it isn't plugged up.

With 340K miles I would have to agree with JohnB.

If turns out not to be your heater core: Bleed ALL the air out of your cooling system. When ever I do a coolant flush on a customers car I make sure the heater gets over 120.

And of course you might just want to throw in a new thermostat.

ok, hood up and standing on passenger side and looking at the 2 hoses going into the firewall----it looks like the hose on the drivers side would be the larger of the two, am I in the right area and if so, how would I check the restrictor (that is if I knew what the hell it was lol).

true story---350,135 miles on original engine!! and heater core. drive it 140 round trip 5 days a week SAC to Fairfield. have had a few COLD nights on the way to work this year. I hope (it) takes these comments as a compliment and doesn't leave my sorry ass along side of I-80 tonight.................

Sounds like you're blend door under the dash is not shutting all the way..That will allow cold air and hot air to get mixed and blow luke warm...LMK

venomous, you may be on to something, I changed the fan motor several months back (air-conditioning time) and a/c seemed to work OK.....but as the winter months got colder and colder, I probably didn't make the connection right away!!!! I will give that some serious investigation.

ssf, absolutely true story 350K. basically: 3 clutch's, 3 water pumps, 2 alternators, smog pump last year, a/c compressor, wiper motor, one set of mufflers. a new radiator 2 years ago when I went to sleep and ran off the road into a ditch. maybe a few other minor things_______but thats about it. what I worry most about is the timing chain, but so far it starts and runs good with a quart oil ever 2k or there abouts. I've racked-up almost 100K in the last 3 years commuting to Fairfield from Roseville.

As a point of interest: I also have a 2003 Suburban. So far: a new crate engine at 91K that cost me about $4800 out of pocket, out a $1000 for fuel pump at ~75K. now, I have to take the fuse out of the windshield wipers because the motor will not turn off (I only get slow and fast--no INT). passenger window motor will not work...............about 126,000 total miles. oh yea, I paid $1700 for 6 years or 70,000 warrenty whichever came first, so much for chevrolet products.

I have a 5.3 liter used crate motor for $150 (basically that was my core charge) if anyone might be interested ???
