It is the concept as finding tdc on a ford motor. Chevy does there firing order diffrent than ford. Chevy is like this D P Rear of engine 7 8 5 6 3 4 1 2 Front of engine The firing order goes like this start at number 1 and going counter clockwise 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
When you drop the dist it should be pointing at the number one plug. To find tdc roll the engine over and watch the exsuast valve ounce it closes you are on the compresion stroke and simply roll the harmonic balancer to 0 on the balancer and that should get you close enought to drop the dist. If this engine will be carbed you simply disconect the vacum line plug it off and set you base timming at 10 deg and your set.

Ok but I no number 1 is on the drivers side, so I'm gonna have to take the valve cover off?

Well you could just take number one plug out and roll the motor over until you get a hit of air from the hole and then go barkwards to 0 on the balancer same thing. Thats the fast way to find compression stroke.
