Factory is 8-10 but for performance there is no "exact". The highest initial you can get without pinging is what you want for performance and setting the TPS can also make a difference.
I'm not sure of your expertise level here but here's how I do it.
You need to be able to determine where your setup "pings" and go from there.
On my own 5.0 I had good luck with 12-13 degrees with the pill out and the TPS set at .99 volts with premium fuel. However a friend of mine's would ping that high and in the winter I could get 14+ out of mine. It really varies.
Not all timing marks are exact and not all timing lights are exact either. Sometimes you have to rely on what's best for your combo, especially if you're trying to squeeze out that last degree of advance.
For best results if you know what you're doing set both TPS and timing since they will work together once the pill is reconnected.
I always advance it until it pings just a tad on high octane fuel, and then back it off 1-2 degrees or until pinging goes away completely and never comes back.
You want ZERO detonation/pinging and a 1-2 degree cushion is usually enough although some say 2-3 or more. It depends on how sensitive your ears are and how much you trust the theory. I've never detonated 2 degrees back from an audible ping when using my own ears, and I was able to squeeze another degree out of it in the winter when the air was colder.
If this sounds too complicated just set it at 10 and you should be good with no worries and pay someone you trust with more experience to tinker for ya.
I hope this helps and good luck! [ January 05, 2009, 08:37 AM: Message edited by: bwkelley76 ]
