what makes the 8.8 from a 94+ wider then a fox 8.8? is it the axels or is it the housing measured flange to flange

It was the fact that they used the disk brakes over the drums. Its the flange that is bolted to the ends of the axle tubes that holds the caliper on. That is the reason for the extra material and the longer axles used in 94s on up. And its measured flange to flange.

the axles are 3/4" longer per side to accept the disc brakes

ok, so the houseing and axel tubes are the same length as a fox. and the only difference in length between the two is the extra brackets for a rear disc set on 94+? so remove the brackets your back to fox length?

Correct, The housings are the same width from 86-98 The disc brake axles and bracketry are where the increased width comes from.
