Topic: Ahhhhhg - How the hell do you get the nut off the strut?

Hey Guys,
So im in the middle of the front spring thing. GOod news...front spring out, no spring compressor needed ( going back in we will see. )
Anyways im also replacing the struts up front, but damn how do you get the nut off the top of the strut? I try with a wrench and the boot spins. My chilton manual is no help at all...

sometimes you have to bounce the car, while you hit it w/ the impact gun.

impact gun with a floor jack compressing the control arm has always worked for me.

no impact than grab the strut at the top with vice grips and use an open end wrench on the strut nut. takes a while but it works

Well i just went and bought and air compressor and an air gun kit. Came with a 1/2" impact gun, a 3/8 air ratchet, and an air hammer...
Ill tackle it tomorrow

WOW! For what that costs you could have had the car towed to a shop and had the entire front suspension rebuilt! At least now you've got an air compressor and some air tools. Give us details on the compressor. Post pics!

hey ill take ANY excuse to go and buy new tools and i think that im about to have the same problem with my car ive need a new compressor now i got an excuse that the old lady will eat up thanks folks

Well I just moved into a new place with a garage about 2 months ago, so I new it was time to invest in tools. The air compressor isnt anything fancy, just enough to get the job done (I hope).
Its a craftsman 1HP 125PSI 4 Gallon compressor. I think it has enough pressure to get it done, if not they said I could return it and upgrade. This is my first time with air tools so I didnt really know what to look for, as the Impact wrench didnt say what it need.
125PsI enough?

It's not so much the PSI, it's the CFM (Cubic Feet of air per Minute). The more CFM, the better. Good air impacts like 12-15 CFM. Check the CFM on your compressor but I doubt a 1 hp, 4 gal is gonna produce a lot of CFM. The minimum compressor you should get is 2.5 hp w/20 gal tank. That's a good starter compressor. When you can save some more cash, move up to a good 220v 5hp single stage. Of course there's always 2-stage but that's a whole different animal. As far as impact guns, it's all about torque and quality. The more torque the better.
Here's a pic of my compressor and impact gun..........................................
Ingersoll-Rand 220v, 5 hp, 18 CFM, 80 gal tank. I shouldn't ever have to buy another compressor.
Aircat 1/2 drive air impact. 1000 ft lbs of torque! Gotta be careful with this as it can easily snap off wheelstuds! Bought both the compressor and impact brand new for well under $900.

lookint at the compressor set up, i take it you have your own lift in your garage lol... that compressor is way bigger than what we use at the repair shop

Damn nice setup. Well the impact gun I got rocks all the other bolts so far....minus the one im trying to get off. I think my problem is that the shock is off the car and the nut just spins. Im gonna run over to Orchard and pick up a bigass vice grip. I dont care about the strut so i dont mind if the threads get messed up. If not im gonna cut the fucking thing off and get a new nut

that would probaly be the easiest way for you, just get a cutoff wheel and cut the nut off, i did that to my 92, i couldnt get the nut off, it kept on spinning like yours. i have a cut of wheel if your near my area, i can let you borrow it

SWEET! Got the bolt off....I ended up putting the strut back in the car, put one bolt loosely on the spindle and put the cars wieght on it. While the Impact wrench didnt get it, i used a monkey wrench and a long jack handle....
Now .... the spring...lol im bieng a damn chicken....I have a pry bar and i start jacking, but it never looks like the spring is gonna seat.....kinda scared lol...the spring compressor does not fit, but im gonna get some nuts on it to get it to fit...just didnt have a socket big enough....
One of the only things I havent done to a car is the springs...so this is a learning experience.

Yeah it's in my track home 2-car garage(that only holds 1 car)!

It's my funnel storage/drain system. Works pretty good and cost nothing to build. Here's a better pic..............................
