Hey guys what cam would be best in a 347 stroker to pass smog? What would be the best cam for power? Thanks for the help!

Thank you! How would a E cam work in there? Would it pass with it? When you say custom, who does that for you? Does it go by your heads and intake? I havent decided on an intake yet, but Im running GT40 alum heads. Also what compression should I run?

you always will be taking a chance with any aftermarket cam. I run a XE274HR comp cams in my 331 stroker with GT40 aluminum heads. It passed the tail pipe emissions test about a month ago. I ran hotter than stock plugs set the timming down to 7 degrees and put in fresh oil. it passed with out a 3 min cat warm up.

friend of mine has an E cam in his 351w, AFR heads, 24lb injectors. He passed at a test only station without any problems.

"Needacage" has a custom smog legal cam in his 347 that passed smog. I think he went with HTI?

Hi! I'm new to the forum, but not new to Fords. I bought my first car(1970 Mach 1, 351C 4V AT) in 1972. And plenty more since. I'm thinking 331 or 347 for my 88 Lincoln Mark VII LSC. Must pass cali "test only" smog.

You guys who have passed, what year is your VEHICLE(standards may be different). Anyone know more about "needacage" 's setup?

I'm just desiring a MILD increase in torque........., I won't be manually shifting the AOD. No racing, another 75-100HP would be fine!! I do not want to give up any standard features(ABS, Cruise, etc.).

So I'm thinkink 331 or 347 when my 236770 mile 302 gives up. No Nitrous. Thanks, Mike C.

it all depends on the seperation angles and individual duration on the intake and exhaust.

the XE274hr is the largest cam I've seen pass smog in any motor.

I had a XE282hr in a 377 pass before but that was with brand new cats.

New cats will usually hide anything. Problem is, if for some reason you get sent to a referee, buying new cats for all your smogging occasions can get pricey.

I would check out comp's ford stroker cams.

but you have to have a pretty healthy induction and compression ratio to take advantage of those cams.

As far as cam is concerned, I am looking for low range torque, 1200 to wherever the AOD upshifts in D or OD.

I would also say a custom camshaft would be the best way to go, but for the bang for the buck, it is very hard to beat the XE274. I know of a few more of these cams in stroker motors that didn't have any problem passing the sniffer.

Custom from who?

How about Coast High Performance's "california legal 347" ? It uses a 4018 (forgot brand) cam.

Does "Jay" charge $50 for the recommendation, of an "off the shelf" cam?

How about a recommendation from the respective cam manufacturer's?

I had a 331 with AFR heads and a TFS stage 2 that passed. Everyone keeps posting up about test only smogs like its a special test with tighter restrictions or something but its not. The specs are the same, test only shops just don't do any repairs and cant tweak with the car to help it pass. I smog all my cars at a test only shop.

It's been 2 years and I now have 253,000 miles. I STILL want to rebuild this engine, probably 331 or 306, w/ the above stated goals.

Any new info? The thread just ended inconclusivly.

Every combo is different. It's best to state what you want (displacement, intake choice, cylinder heads, etc) and work from there. I've gotten everything from stock cam'd 302's to stroked 351w's to pass...legally. It's all in the build.
