I had FRPP 3.73 gears put in my 07 Mustang GT about two weeks ago. Ever since I've had gear whine in 3rd gear and above, accelerating, decel., and coasting. They told me it wasn't very loud and that is isn't a concern and that the gears are tight and adjusted properly. I can hear it over the radio and over my Flowmaster axle-back.
Has anyone had a similar experience with them? I took it today to get the oil changed after the break-in period and they gave me the green light. From what I've been reading on here, any gears properly installed shouldn't make noise (excluding spur-cut). I even spent the extra $$$ and put the bearing kit in as well. Pisses me off to say the least that my car sounds like a POS now.
I was also wondering what it might cost to have someone adjust it properly. New shims or whatever. [ March 10, 2008, 02:07 PM: Message edited by: Xplosive22 ]

Aftermarket gears in the 05+'s do make a "little" noise. Don't know how loud yours is, but "silent" is about impossible from what I've found/heard.

I went through the same experience two times. The first was done by Ford under warraunty and they put in 4.10's for free so I couldn't complain. Those gears were bad noisey and the stock diff was horrible. This last week I had them changed back to 3.55,I have a turbo now, and a Detroit Locker put in. When the shop that did mine called to say the car was ready, he wanted to open up the diff and re-shim and retest it to make sure he did it right since it made noise. He checked it, it was within specs, he re-shimmed just to see if it would make a difference and it didn't. He did everything he could. I have replaced all the rear suspension and done someother stuff that make the car noisey in the inside so I really didn't care.
When I picked up the car the next day and drove it, the gears were much quiter than before. About 20-30% of what it was. You can try and have the gears adjusted again as they might be off. Your shop should have pulled the cover and checked it. The way you described the noise is pretty bad. If you want the name of the shop that did mine, shoot me a PM.
Have you done any suspension work, replaced your shifter or anything? Those mods usually will add to the noise you hear.
Mine's an 06' GT by the way.

If you decide to get a new Diff and want MAX traction, get a locker. But be prepared to hear strange clanking and banging noises. It's strange the way the thing makes wierd noises, but I was warned about it so I can't complain.
After getting the locker I can now use all of first and second without smoking the tires. It's awesome. I can't wait to go to the track and see what it will run.

Maybe it is just regular gear noise. Sucks hearing it when the car used to be quiet. When it interrupts my music I get instantly mad haha. I'll deal with it though if it can't be helped.
My car is bone stock except for the gears. I put the stock mufflers on so I could hear the true extend of hte noise. I think I'll be buying a full system now to cover it up.
I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I always feel that things can be done better. So hearing "weeeeee" riding down the freeway catches my atttention. Bleh! Lol.

why would new rear end gears only make noise in third gear? Use 2nd or 4th lol no problem. mustangs pick up weird harmonics(noises) Ford has done a ton of stuff to try and get rid of the noise for the gears your car was built with. Thats what the big digbone weight is for on the Fox body diffs. You swap gears all that sound deadening tech is out the window.

Once I hit about 35mph in 3rd it begins to whine. It definitely isn't the tranny because I have that noise too lol. I'm pretty sure cars next to me can hear it. I guess aftermarket gears just aren't the way they used to be. I'll just slap on a supercharger. If 1st and 2nd start whinning too then no one will know the difference.
My last modified car made noises too. I should have known better. Slap on the wrist for that.

They did my gears 12 years ago. I can't believe it has been that long! Anyway, my car was pretty stock at the time and I went to 3.55's from 3.08's. It made a little noise and that pissed me off. I didn't do it myself because I wanted to make sure that it was adjusted correctly and wouldn't howl. I brought it back to them and they put a different set of gears in it for me. I had bought all of the parts from them. He said it was adjusted correctly and was just a noisy set of gears. There were FMS gears. It was much quieter the 2nd time around. It sounds to me like something is messed up. I would make them fix it. Send JohnB a message and see what he thinks. I am pretty sure that he is the resident rear-end expert.

Thanks all I'll do that.
I bought the FRPP 3.73's myself including the Motive bearing kit. Really, it would be no different than what they would supply. I have a feeling that me buying my own parts gives them an excuse to turn me away. More time fixing my rear end would slow down business. I'll PM this John B and see if I can't get a straight answer.
