for some reason my heater takes for ever to kick in and blow heat.i live in hayward and work in alameda and every morning by the time im entering alameda is when it starts blowing warm air.sometimes it doesn't blow warm air at all i dont know why when i turn it on to get it going i get a wiff of coolent through the vents not very strong but i can smell it.does that mean my heater core is going out? another thing that i cant figuer out is a/c or heater it only blows through the defroster vents, i dont know if its the switch or what but it used to work fine.

any problems with the knob (tight/stuck) that controls the temp of the heater. i had a problem with the cable for that control knob it some how got stuck. that could be the problem with your low heat situation.

if it only blows through the defrost vents, that means something is wrong with the door actuators or a vacuum line is leaking or something like that. when air only blows through the defrost vents it is in default mode. hope that makes sense

adam5.0 is rite, but if you smell coolant 90% chance either ur heater core is leaking or the hose to it is. check the hoses, check for damp spots on your carpet and ater you park it look for dripping.

Also check that your coolant level is good.

Most likely you have a broken vacuum line. That is why your heater is only blowing through the defrost vents. The line runs from the passenger side to the drivers side along the firewall. Check it out.
If it isn't warming up quick it could be a problem with your thermostat. Also, if you smell coolant then you have a leak somewhere. Could be the heater core but it could be a hose in the engine somewhere. Do you get steam coming out of the defrosters?

You can check to see if you thermostat is working properly by pulling it out, boiling it in water, and seeing if it opens. This is an old trick my Dad used to do. He would even do it on new thermostats to make sure they weren't defective.

Coolant smell? Then you got a leak somewhere and if your core has never been replaced before then I bet that is what the problem is.
*Check coolant level *No need to test the old t-stat. If you already have a new one just plop it in (btw..if your t-stat is a 160 or something low like that you will also notice that it will take some time to get heat from the heater..stick with the 180 degree and up ones).
The heater core is actually not that hard to replace..no worries..just takes time and patience.

The worse job on a 5.0 is actually draining and refilling the rear end...lots of cocca in there and it gets everywhere...
