A friend of mine and I are having a disagreement on air cleaner sizes. He has a 67 gt with a 390 in it. He currently is running a 14x3 unit but wants to switch to a 6x3 unit. The smaller unit matches his valve covers better. I say going to the smaller one will affect his overall performance as well as idle speed etc. He says the only affect it will have is decreased surface area for filtering. I have never seen any tests on this subject. What do you folks think?

I would deff think it would effect his performance. more so depending on the size carb and air requirements of the engine. As well as forcing the air to make a sharper turn into the carb,I'm not going to go into that but it's the theory behind these two products.

your best bet is to hook up a vaccume gauge to the inside of the air cleaner (nipple on the base plate) and read the vaccum at W.O.T. to see if the air cleaner is a restriction.
