Topic: I broke my timing chain.... need help

So I was juss makin a u turn and the chain broke... so i know i wasnt really givin it hell when it broke... but im just really curious how it broke.... Does any one know some ways u could brake a chain... its a cloyes double roller i know its bigger then the stock one i had... im juss kinda pissed cause i just put the motor together like a few months ago... I juss kinda want to know cuz im gonna have to do a bunch of motor work and i dont want to have to rebuild this motor again... I was thinkin of going with a geardrive but i dont know... by the way the motor i fully built 302 with heads,cam,intake... on the real its prolly only makin about 350 or 360 at the crank...... so yea if anyone could help me out and let me know what they think before i start puttin it back together that would be great... cause as of right now im putting the blame on a faulty chain...

No offense, but I'm going with the assembly/buildup. I've yet to see a brand-new one fail on it's own; typically it's not seated completely on the crank snout and binds until failure.
A crank key-way not installed correctly normally causes this.

are the teeth of the cam gear and crank gear
chewed up or just a clean chain break?
new timing gears? look for any unusal wear in the chain links. I'm with johnb,but wear patterns tell stories in it self too.
consider you may've bent some valves and damaged some pistons before you put it all back together ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

Possibly used an early 302 style timing setup on the late motor accidentally?

yea i know bout the valves... the last motor broke the crank in half... and had some valve slappadge.... but i didnt put that motor together....
no offense taken by the way.... its the first motor i have ever put together... i didnt think it was gonna last as long as it did..
i was thinkin that i might not have bent any valves cause the pistons i put in had like a big two step valve relief on the valve side... but no matter im gettin new heads anyway....
