Use the triangle edge closest to the center of the engine as your reference. Line this up with your balancer's marks.

using a timing light, maybe this is why the car pings a little under load? to the left of that mark would be retarded though right? pinging means overadvanced doesent it?

If the the degree marks on the balancer are to the left of the pointer to the point you cannot see them, you are way to advanced and yes that would be why you car is pinging.

Get some 00 steel wool, start the car, climb under the car and place the steel wool on the balancer while it is running. It will clean all the crap off the balancer so you can see the numbers. Then point the the timing light on the flat part of the timing marker on the front cover. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE TIMING LIGHT CONNECTED TO THE #1 CYLINDER ONLY!!!

no kidding, ide pull a trailer with a 300 gallon sprayer tank and fill the damn thing up, lol. the best ever was last summer when some numskull at 76 screwed up and they were selling us 100 octane for the price of 87, im sure the guy running the store that day wondered why the hell so many loud cars were filling up at pump 6... good news travels fast
