im missing something here, theres no timing degree mark on my little indicator thing, the piece itself is there but where are the marks supposed to be? the balancer is marked but i cant tell what the timing is set at

Use the triangle edge closest to the center of the engine as your reference. Line this up with your balancer's marks.

ok so if im standing in front of the motor , i want the timing mark on the balancer to be lined up with the edge farthest to the RIGHT...right?

right now it is 3/4" to the LEFT of that part of the flange

Are you using a timing light or attempting to set the dist in for the first time??

using a timing light, maybe this is why the car pings a little under load? to the left of that mark would be retarded though right? pinging means overadvanced doesent it?

If the the degree marks on the balancer are to the left of the pointer to the point you cannot see them, you are way to advanced and yes that would be why you car is pinging.

Get some 00 steel wool, start the car, climb under the car and place the steel wool on the balancer while it is running. It will clean all the crap off the balancer so you can see the numbers. Then point the the timing light on the flat part of the timing marker on the front cover. ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE TIMING LIGHT CONNECTED TO THE #1 CYLINDER ONLY!!!

woohooo, that was it, the steel wool cleaned off all the paint that some nimrod applied to the balancer, my timing is WAY off, lol.. im going to time and throw plugs and wires at it today. thanks guys!

Man i would start off at 14-15 initial if you run 93 octane. I know we have 93 here in TX, i dont know what you all have, but I am sure it is similar.

i dropped it back to 10 which is stock i guess, and bumped it back up to 13-14 but im running 91. no wonder it was pinging with any more than 1/4 throttle it was running at about 20!!!

no kidding, ide pull a trailer with a 300 gallon sprayer tank and fill the damn thing up, lol. the best ever was last summer when some numskull at 76 screwed up and they were selling us 100 octane for the price of 87, im sure the guy running the store that day wondered why the hell so many loud cars were filling up at pump 6... good news travels fast
