I just pulled of one of my cylinder heads and looked at the valves and this is what i saw. Is this normal? or what would caise this? could this cylinder have not been firing?

Fuel and no spark would cause a black cylinder. It looks like this one has had water in the cylinder, thats why it looks so clean...

I would think that would cause major pinging and whitish deposits on the valve and plug. Since he didn't mention a blown head gasket I assumed no spark.

I just thought of somthing else. what if my rockers were adjusted wrong and it kept one of the valves slightly open? what would happen then?

Not that. You would have a loss of power from your lack of compression, but it would likely still try to burn the fuel-air mixture to a certain extent.

Did the thing have a miss when you pulled it apart? If it didn't, then it obviuosly must have been firing that cylinder...

to me it didnt seem like it had a miss. but my friends that own and build race cars said they heard a miss. but i guess i couldnt tell because it was most likley like that from the begining.

Could there be a chance that my head has a crack? if so how could i tell? im putting the heads on a new motor tomorrow anything i should do before i do? Anything to prevent this again?

If there is a question of the condition I would take them to a machine shop and have them checked before installing. If you get in a hurry and they do have a problem then you have to pull it all back down again and waste time and gaskets.

How about worn out rings letting some oil in. Did the plug look okay? Was it wet at all around the threads?
How many miles were on those heads. I just took mine off after 14k miles and none of the valves were as clean as your "clean" ones, but my rings were pretty worn out.

Nevermind, I just looked at the pictures and re-read the message. I was thinking that they were all clean except for a one or two.
That cylinder was so clean that it sure doesn't look like anything was going on in there. Were the rockers installed on that cylinder? Just kidding. I would think that no spark would cause that.

Check all the head and deck surfaces and the headgaskets thoroughly and make sure there was no water getting into the cylinder...

Aluminum heads have to get pretty hot to crack from overheating (250 degrees plus).

if ur getting ready to put those on that new motor u bought u should have them checked for cracks and resurfaced at the least depending on how many miles u have on them it might not be a bad idea to get a valve job done on them to make sure the guides are all good along with the valve stem seals and have the valve springs checked to make sure they will work with ur cam just my .02. btw there are plenty of good shops in our area to get this done. ljs(in napa)bailey bros.(in american canyon)although id stay away from there and save u a trip they dont like to mess with fords or anything low budget they are really into sprint car motors, here in town we got george beavis, fm machine, then there is is try valley in concord, morgans in walnut creek,robs in hayward and the list can go on.

The heads only have 3000 miles on them. The head gaskets have no sign of leaks, but i think the gasket under the manifold was leaking into the cylinder. that was probably the problem.

There's no water passage in the center of the intake gasket
