retarding the timing will make it worse. all cars smell rich when you first start them up

actually ur probably right...becasue after i let it warm up the rough idle kind of slows down and becomes normal...but when i also hit the accelerator, the tach drops low , then goes back up...kinda like skips a little...should i check the MAF sensor and clean it if necessary? also thee IAV (correct?) sensor next to the throttle body?...thnx

it actually takes a while to fire up too...i have to pump the accelerator hella and hope if fires...why would it do that? almost like their aint no gas in the damn thing...u think a new distributor, cap, rotor, spark plugs, and wires will do the trick?

Pull the spark plugs and see if they look black. Also, dump your codes and see if anything is going on.
A tune up might not help but it couldn't hurt.

For an injected car you don't need to pump the accelerator all it does is flood the engine. The reason is smokes is probably because your flooding the engine. Check your battery connections and make sure they are clean, if their dirty thats probably why it has hard time starting. Also stop pumping the gas when you start it.

If its not starting and you think its flood, push the gas pedal all the way to the floorboard it turns off the injectors and sometimes your car will start doing this. Have you run the codes?

see if a local autoparts store rents out code readers and if not its always a good idea to own one.
