I'm having problems with an AOD that was performance built in southern CA. I think I'm getting erratic performance from the transmission even though I set the TV cable with a pressure gague. I'm thinking it may have a warped valve body (1986 AOD) Who does performance AOD work in the auburn/sacramento area that can do the diagnostics for me?

I'm not sure but I believe it is trying to shift into 2nd while it is in drive. This is a performance transmission with a 3000rpm stall, I set the TV cable using a pressure gague to 2 lbs at idle with no slack in the line (lokar) It would shift at about 30 lbs. However, today it started the problem. Stays in low with no problems. We came back and the tv cable was loose. I reset it to 5 lbs at idle but I'm not sure that there may be other problems. No more than 125 miles on the engine and transmission.

I'm not sure what you mean by "trying to shift into 2nd while it is in drive" - is it taking off in 2nd from a stop, or is it not shifting 1-2, 2-3, 3-4? More info please.

It will start out in drive but sooner or later there is a jerk and the car slows down. Not in the manner of a down shift but as if it was attempting to shift into another gear while running. It does not do this in 1st gear. The oil looks clean but there is a burnt smell as if the clutches were subjected to extreme abuse. Shift into neutral and then back into drive and it repeats with the same problem. There was a grinding noise one time sounding like metal on metal contact. There is a low growling noise associated with the slow down. It feels as if the brakes have been applied when it does it.
When the engine is first started it takes a while to get the transmission to shift into gear. When first installed we had to rev the trans to 3000 rpm or so to get it into gear but after that initial start it would shift ok. However, sometimes on a sudden stop it would come out of gear. I attributed that to the pump sucking air on a fluid slosh in the pan. It has an overcapacity aluminum pan on it and we are running synthetic transfluid.

Well, if the fluid is burnt and the tv cable was loose, more than likely it went to minimum line pressure and smoked the direct clutch pack. That could cause it to feel like is trying to apply 2 gears at one time. Basically, if the fluid is burnt, it's gotta come back out.

We cranked it up this morning after resetting the TV...this time to 4lbs at idle. It ran well until it warmed up then the same problem. It looks like it will be coming out but first I'm going to try a different valve body just in case the valve body is warped and getting bleed over when it gets warm. I sent you an E-mail with a picture. Removing the tranny will be a very unpleasant task for this beast.

trust me, the valve body isn't warped. if the fluid is thrashed, don't waste your time.
