I was wondering what you guys thought about the Gt40 long block crate engines, the ones you can get through summit or jegs for about $3500 with gt40x aluminum heads and B or E cam. I am looking for input on them good or bad from anyone who has had experiance with them it seems like a good deal.

I wish I had gone that route! It would have saved me some $$$ in the end. I was just in Summit in Reno on Friday and they have the 302HO GT-40 long blocks on Managers Special for like $2,995. In fact there was a crated one on the showroom floor with the sale tag-I'm sure the deal is still going on. Oh and BTW it looked well assembled just bolt on an intake and go!!! They won't put that much to the wheels, nor do they all make the same power numbers at the crank. You will be lucky to get 280RWHP from one of those crate engines. There are much better parts that Ford could have used to build their 5.0 crate motors, but that isn't why they make them.
The crate motors, from Ford, are a performance replacement for someone who is on a budget and who simply needs to replace their own, worn out stock 5.0 motor.
Bottom line; They are cheap, will last a long time if you don't beat on them, and they are a great replacement for a worn out 302 from the mid '80s
Remember, you get what you pay for.

I have 6+ years of daily use and open track events on my FRPP crate motor. No problems at all

you can build better for the same or less, those 351 crates are pretty weak at 385hp for $5800

Suggested retail prices and real world prices are much different, you can find that crate motor for under $5k. That also includes a pan, intake, w pump, dist, etc...all installed and ready to drop in. Most builder's "long block" prices don't include those extras so it's important for the original poster to compare evenly. FYI, the a351 usually dynos well above the factory rating, just ask the Cobra kit car crowd.

I just went by the price at summit, it did dyno better than expected, was not impressed by the internals on the one we fixed.
