Hi there, I needed some information on what it would take to convert a 1966 mustang v6 over to a 289 or 302 v8. Do I just change the motor driveshaft and rearend? What about converting into a 5.0 F.I motor, is there wiring involved, whatever info would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I seem to recall an article on this a few years ago (well, possibly over 5 years ago) in Fast Fords and Mustang Magazine. A few things to keep in mind:

Motor and tranny mount positions. May require transplant from a 66 wrecker (v8 mustang or fairlane).
New shocks and springs.
May need to fabricate new exhaust hangers.
Check steering clearance; I don't think it's an issue but if it's power steering, hoses would probably need to be replaced since the PS pump is probably located differently.
Review your brakes; the v8 was a heavier beast than the straigt 6. If racing is in mind, going with SSBC front disk would be a nice upgrade.

Wiring - that's not a big deal for a car this age, however, if you're doing a 5.0L and EFI, there's going to be some work involved in adapting the computer (or buying a standlone EFI system.) but if carb'd, I'd say you're good to go since the only wires are simply ignition, voltage reg., starter and electric choke if you decide on that type of carb.

One final thought: radiator; not sure if the straight 6's radiator will be adaquate for the V8 of your choice so might want to look into that as well.

Good luck.

A 6 cyl radiator will work ok on a STOCK 289 oe 302, but not great. Id reccomend just spend the 300 bucks and get an aluminum radiator. Youll need engine and tranny mounts, struts, v8 springs, Id reccomend swapping v8 brakes, just do the grenada spindle kit, and it will give you 5 lug and discs. Find an 8 inch or 9 inch rear end, as the 7.5 thats in it now is crap. Rear leaf springs would be good to, as the originals are probably shot. I would stick to carb unless you want wires everywhere under the hood.
